So as stated in my other thread I have Made my purchase and am anxiously awaiting arival of the ring. I was talking to a friends wife who was telling me that I could get the same size from her jeweler for cheaper and I couldn't explain why it didn't matter to me. She wasn't completely sure of the certification on her stone but I didn't want to get into it with her. There are so many different things to factor in the price of the stone and it seems that a lot of people don't understand this.

Is there a reason why you need to explain anything to her?
I would just tell her that 'people vary' and leave it at that.

If you educate her too much she might not thank you, especially if what she has is a POS. It's a double edged sword that kind of thing.

"Is that so?"

The only one that you should explain things to is your lady. She should understand why you paid more -- because you bought a better quality product.

I'd compare it to car shopping. You could spend 12k on a sedan that's got lower or risky quality. Or you could cough up the dough for a Toyota or a Honda. Why would you do so? Quality and dependability.

I see what you mean, I just don't want to sound like an ass telling a close friend or family "well you get what you pay for" or something

Exactly! Just tell her that you know that: pricing is very dependent on which lab graded the stone, and also the color and clarity. When you studied up and decided how to balance all the different factors (which can all be balanced in any way you want depending on your priorities) to suit your priorities, you then made sure to check with a number of different, very highly rated, vendors for pricing. And when you found the right fit, you bought the ring. If nothing else... it's diplomatic, confusing, and by the end of the speech she'll be sorry she asked and will change the subject. Sometimes sounding like a geek who over researching things has it's benefits.
