My new fiancé (still such a weird thing to me) proposed to me last Saturday and I was completely surprised. We've been together for 6 years however I had yet to go ring shopping with him, let alone try on any engagement rings myself. Such a weird thing for a 27 year old california girl, but normally I wear nothing on my hands. I am finishing up with nursing school and imagine I'll be pretty rough on my hands but would still want an easy ring to wear daily (under gloves). I was completely surprised when he asked and smitten nonetheless. He mentioned that we could exchange the ring if I didn't like it but that was nothing I ever wanted to do! The only thing he had to go by was the mention of my preference for sleek/dainty rings during my girlfriends wedding 2 years prior. I love the diamond he got and dont want to change a thing about it. I'm havin the most issues with the band because it is a bit thick and a bit round on the sides and just isn't so comfortable to me. Also, I've never thought of what my "perfect" ring style would be until now. And I'm starting to re-evaluate my definition of simple because I am in LOVE with round diamonds in a dainty halo setting.

He told me we could shop for settings this weekend but I'm not sure if I want a completely new setting or if I want to keep my setting and try to add a halo and maybe reduce the band width. I'm so lost when it comes to jewelry and I'm not too sure on the options I have available. I definitely want to keep my ring, but the question is if I should add a halo and if so what kind? I also want to reduce the size of my band as its a bit uncomfortable because it is thicker.

My current e-ring is a round brilliant solitaire 1.0 ct VV2 color I on a platinum 3mm band

Any info would help so much!!
Thanks ;)

I think you are trying to say you want to keep the stone but replace the setting. I'm thinking it would be easier to totally
replace the setting if you want to add a halo and reduce the width of the setting. My SIL is a nurse and chose a bezel set
Ring. It sets low and I would think be easier to get gloves on/off. What you really need to do is go try on a lot of settings
and see what you like (take gloves with you if that's important .)

Congratulations on your engagement!

sounds like you dont like your setting, and thats ok! Your FI sounds like a sweetheart who just wants you to get what you love, so i say do that! And dont feel bad about it!

Seems like there isnt really anything you like about that current setting, so i wouldnt try and rework that setting, thats a lot of money and work when it would be easier and probably cheaper in the long run to return that setting and start fresh.

You can either opt for a low set knife edge prong setting (very thin band) or bezel set it. Both options will make it easier to put on and remove gloves without ripping the gloves off.

I used to have a solitaire with a stone size similar to yours and whenever I had to wear gloves I turned the stone around, still comfortable and no tearing at all. That said, it sounds like you dont like the setting which is totally ok :) . Congrats on your engagement!

Thanks so much for all your replies. And yes, I think I'll be shopping for a new setting. I wanted to give myself time for the band to "grow on me" but my fiancé sug that he'd rather find a setting that I will love instantly  . I feel so ungrateful to not keep the current setting as is, but then again I want to wear the ring without constantly imagining what it would look like differently.

Can anyone suggest a bezel halo setting with no side stones for a 1ct in the 1500 range? I currently have platinum but don't mind go for the white gold option.

Thanks again. I'm so happy I signed up for PS!
