Hello all,

I have been lurking around the e-ring sites for the past month and have been able to narrow down a compromise between, size, price, and clarity.

I started out looking for stones in the VVS1 to VVS2 range with excellent cut and E to F clarity. After reading this forum, I broadened my scope a bit and went down to VS1 and VS2 while staying in the E to F clarity range. I think I like VS1 better since the diamonds I have seen with that rating have fewer to no large inclusions in them. Granted, I do see the magnified pictures online, so I don't know how big of a grain of salt I should use.

I think I found some good stones at James Allen. They all fall into the budget I have of $1500-1700.
Diamond 1 at JA http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-dia...-f-color-vs1-clarity-very-good-cut-sku-486898
Diamond 2 at JA http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-dia...-e-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-541828
Diamond 3 at JA http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-dia...-f-color-vs1-clarity-very-good-cut-sku-486898

I like JA, because they have a great site where I can "preview" diamond.

I'm not sure what the best dimensions are for a diamond, but when view the pictures online I do like a symmetric diamond. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I am open to them!

Thanks,

David from Canada

David in a 10ct diamond you may be able to see a VS1 inclusion with your naked eye.
In a half carat you will find an SI1 impossible to see unless you can focus from really close like 5 inches or less than 15cm

HI Garry!

Thanks for the reply. I would like the diamond to be clean from any distance if possible, and am willing to spend some extra dollars to make it so. I realized that I don't need VVS class diamonds, but will SI class diamonds still be clean?

Hi Tyty333,

Thank you also for your reply. I am not stuck on Canadian diamonds at all. It would be nice, but getting a good diamond is preferred. Thanks for your help. I will try to find some diamonds that have a HCA of less than 2 as well.

Hello Rockmeister,

You will find that most sellers have a standard definition for 'eye-clean' that will be from a specified distance. AT B2C we use 25 cm, others use differing standards. This is from our website:

"Although there is not an industry standard definition of an eye-clean diamond, our definition is derived from three factors: distance, lighting and vision. For a person with normal 20/20 vision, the 'near point', defined as the closest point that an item can be viewed by the eye without appearing blurry under normal lighting, is 25cm. By incorporating an expectation of 'near point' (25cm) viewing, normal lighting, and 20/20 vision our definition of 'eye-clean' gives a realistic baseline for all diamonds - whether loose or in a jewelry setting"

As Garry indicated, you simply cannot be certain an SI diamond will be eye-clean at 'any' distance unless you specifically request that the diamond be viewed at 'any distance' and confirmed eye-clean from a gemologist. It is very important that you make sure you are using your definition of eye-clean in communications with the seller.

Any clarity of VS or higher is going to have a higher likelihood of being eye-clean (at any distance) than SI or lower - though it is possible to find diamonds (esp. at .5 carats) in the SI range that fit what you are looking for.
