I am looking to purchase a 1 ct. fancy diamond, brownish-greenish-yellow, GIA graded I2. I can purchase it at a great price, but I am wondering if I should.
It is graded VG, VG in cut and finish. It looks quite nice despite the poor grade. The problem I am having is that the GIA report says that there is a cavity in the diamond. Since I am not an expert, I will tell you where the cavity is plotted on the clarity characteristics diagram on the report. It is plotted in the center where the point of the diamond would be. I cannot tell if the cavity is at the point or in the center of the diamond. There are also a couple of feathers near the sides of the diamond. The clarity grade is based on clouds that are not shown on the diagram.
Since I have read that the clarity is based also on the durability of a diamond, my question is this: Is this diamond durable or should I pass on it, irrespective of price. Thanks so much for your time.

I was trying to edit my post, but couldn't sorry for the gibberish. What I meant to say is that the polish and symmetry were both Very Good. I have had quite a few people look at the post. I really don't know anything about diamonds to speak of; this is not a trick post. I really am as clueless as I sound. Please respond so that I know if I should purchase the diamond or not. Thanks so much.
 
I think we ALL would be cautious about buying an I2 but without pictures (good ones) and the plot most everyone is not willing to risk
their reputation by say "its fine, go ahead and buy it".

If I can send you a picture of the plot, would you be able to tell?

If the cavity is plotted on the table side then that is where it reaches the surface. Be aware that an I2 based on clouds is likely to be a diamond with significantly compromised sparkle. Your post suggests you have seen the stone. It may look decent as a loose stone perfectly clean, but if you are planning on putting it into jewelry and wearing it, as soon as it gets a little dirty the stone may quickly lose its 'snap'.
 
Seeing the plot, the cavity is on the culet itself. Not really a durability factor if it is set conventionally where the culet is suspended above the finger and protected within the mounting.
 
It is hard to see. Is the red and green marking on the second diagram? If so, there is a cavity at the culet. I'd be very unlikely to consider an I2, though.

Can you show us a photo of the stone?

Yes, the mark is red and green. Are the feathers an issue? I have seen a lot of I2 fancy colored diamonds. That's the only reason I considered it. I would never purchase an I2 white diamond. If the cavity is on the culet, does it look like a chip? Sorry for all the questions; just trying to figure out what I should do. I know price should not be discussed, but it is under $800. Does that change things any?
 
Here's a picture of the diamond. Not a very good one, though. I have a thing for green diamonds, so I guess that's what makes it so attractive to me--in addition to the price, of course. Investment? s-l1600 (1).jpg
 
The cavity will look very much like a chipped culet. If you like the stone and the money is not an issue, go for it.
Investment - NO.
 
It is definitely impacted by the clouds.
Resale is going to be very hard to impossible so an investment it is not.
The question becomes is it worth the money to you to own it?
That is how a stone like that would be valued.
Only you can answer that.
I would start very low if I were making an offer.
 
Would this be an everyday ring or just for fun? If you are concerned about the diamond being the best quality, I am sure that the experts (not me) can help you find something better, but I doubt that it will be equal size at $800

If you are looking at this as an investment don't purchase this stone. If it is just for fun and you like it, I say go for it and enjoy something that you love.

A few months back, I puchased an estate ring that had an uncertified 1ctish fancy light yellow. I knew the center stone wouldn't pass price scope standards, but I loved the setting and it was a great price, so I went for it and I have no regrets.
