Hi, I posted a couple of threads trying to find a nice diamond, but I saw somewhere on this site where I could enter all the dimmensions and it would grade it for me, I had to enter depth, polish table etc. Please let me know if you can help. Also I posted a list of diamonds, and some one told me they thought it was the only one that caught there eye as far as dimmensions but said I might have to worry about the girdle would someone please explain, they said the diamond may cause the diamond to face up smaller? Is that ok, or would it not be very attractive?

I think that was only for round diamonds...there is a link upin either the tools or knewledge section of this site I believe, but I don''t know that it works for "fancy cut" diamonds like the emerald or princess.

That''s right, the cut tool is for rounds. I''m afraid most of us (consumers) can''t tell you much about emerald cut diamonds from the measurements. Do you have pictures? That''s almost essential. The reason thick girdles is bad is that it means a lot of the weight is there, and the stone might have a smaller diameter than one with a thin to medium girdle of the same weight.

Well, if the diamond carries weight in the girdle, it will look smaller on your GF's hand. So that is not a good thing. Ask the vendor to send you pictures. These numbers are not enough to go on. Please don't consider buying an EC without pictures.

Since EC's look small for their weight anyhow (compared to rounds, ovals, pears, etc), I would choose to pass on a diamond with any extremely thick girdle. You want your diamond to look as big as it can and still be an excellent cut.

Highlight your stone shape and take it from there.

ok i understand the girdle can hold alot of weight- then would you say it would be better to have a mediuam girdle with a larger table?

A thin, medium, or thick girdle are all good, with medium being the best. It may be hard to find also. Look for a table 60-65.5%.

With so many threads going I can understand how this could be a little confusing

. You have had most of the experts that visit this site give you some excelent feedback including looking at pictures. With that said, I can appreciate your intensity with the holidays coming but please don''t make a fast decision without seeing the pictures and deciding what you think is the best. You are spending a lot of money on this item that will last a lifetime. Ok, no more advice from me.

The link firegoddess provided has a lot of information. If you just choose the cut then you will get the standard grading chart at the bottom.

Simply put, a medium girdle with a larger table will lead the diamond to look bigger on your girlfriends hand. If that is important to you, then yes it is better. But...not if you are sacrificing the clarity or color IMO.

You also mentioned that your girlfriend prefers a rectangle shape vs. a square. The chart mentioned also gives you a reference for that. Personally I like a rectangle shape, but not too rectangle so I wouln''t go above a 1.8 ratio.

I hope this helps.

e-Thick is just too thick for me.
sl-thick to thick is as thick as I would go.
See your other thread for the answer on the table question.
If I was buying one id start with www.goodoldgold.com they know EC's
Wink at www.winkjones.com has become another expert on them from
his studies of the AGS cut grade/ASET for them.
Well cut EC's do have a premium but in my opinion are worth it.

Todd at www.niceice.com is someone else I consider well informed when it comes to EC cuts.
