Venture a guess?

something that now can't be unseen and makes my skin crawl?

Dried sap?

When I was a kid there was this bubbles in a tube stuff you could buy. The kit included a tube (like a small toothpaste tube) of gooey smelly stuff stuff that was kind of like thick rubber cement, and a small straw. You'd put a pinch of the gooey plastic stuff on the end of the straw and blow a bubble, then pinch the end of the bubble to keep the air in and - voila! Instant toy! That was the theory, anyway. We could never get the bubbles bigger than about the size of a grapefruit, they were too fragile to play with, and they weren't much to look at, either.

Anyhow, this picture looks like the contents of about 100 tubes of the stuff.

That, or petrified intestines.

Here are two clues.

It may be worth $18,000.

It is from a living thing, and not a plant.

Looks like a type of fungus, I've seen pics of it from here in Scotland but am amazed it might be valuable!

Considering her disgusted facial expression and how she's holding it as far away as possible you're probably right.

Nope.
Not those.

I played with that bubble stuff in a tube too.
Considering how the fumes smelled, like glue or Einsteins inhale to get high, that I'm sure it's illegal now.

Fossilised intestines?

that's kind of what my mental conception of a pearl is, so I'm going with "a really gross pearl"

Ambergris?

A fossil of some sort?

I just stumbled across this, and had no idea about ambergris or that old whale barf made its way into perfume.

It's not listed as an ingredient in Chanal No. 19 which is the only perfume I wear!

I wonder if it's listed as an ingredient on any fragrance.
I also doubt fragrance labeling laws are as strict or mandatory as those for, say, food.
If not perfume makers would be free to just list the plesant-sounding ingredients.

Don't many cosmetics contain animal parts you'd rather not know about?
Then there's testing on animals. ... :(sad
