This is a really interesting timely topic and personally I feel quite conflicted about it.

Morally I have absolutely no issue with the idea of having a gender-neutral term but practically there are a few snags:
- "Mx" looks good on paper but pronounced "Mix" just sounds utterly ridiculous. Need a better term I think.
- If someone is now man or woman what do you refer to them as? He or she? "It" seems rather cruel... :eh:
- There is an element of pandering to every little whim which irritates me.. it seems is impossible NOT to offend someone in the modern world these days...
- As Packrat said - "If you want to be female - accept what comes with it". Ditto a man.

I'm only for it, if EVERYONE can use it. Like I can choose to use it as a married heterosexual female. I'm annoyed that for most of my life I had to use Ms. which has to me a political tone, just because I think it is stupid due to being female I have to use a term that identifies my marital status, OR make a point of using Ms, which has yet other connotations.

So as long as anyone wants to use it, can use it. No I know what my gender is, but say do the telemarketers or other people corresponding with me need to know (though probably my first name gives it away). Also, if I'm applying for a job, do they need to know my gender? It is still a sexist world. Be nicer to get closer to a genderless world in some ways.

I don't really care what people want to call themselves. Whatever they want is ok with me if they are not overly offended if the rest of the world is not quite on board with it. That kind of stuff takes time to be assimilated into culture.

I don't see it as an inconvenience, I see it as a little overboard. It looks to me like we're trying to "bring everyone together" by separating us further from each other. Why don't we work on acceptance of people themselves?

I don't see it as suicides every five seconds because there is no "formal designation" for every single subset of people on the planet. I see it as suicides because we insist on segregating ourselves STILL. I was born a female, I identify as a male, but I've not had surgery so technically I am not a male but I want to be referred to as a male. Except when you address me formally, then you call me a gender neutral term. Either you are or you aren't. If you want to be a female, be a female and accept what it IS TO BE A FEMALE. Or what it is to be a man. If we're trying to point out those who identify w/neither sex, I can sort of see that...*but* does that mean now we need to have a "neutral" on all forms for those who don't feel either way? Do we now need to quit saying He or She? Maybe revert to a number system so everyone is included in every way shape and form? That way it stays as completely neutral and non personal as possible?

So anyway, 1.9.4.3.12.22 is coming over for supper tonight..you remember 1.9.4.3.12.22 don't you? 1.8.5.14.22's youngest offspring?

This. perfect!
Exactly.

Agree completely. Also agree with TP and her "A person is a person". Period.

Amen.
(And I'm sure I've now offended someone by using that colloquialism).

Well actually men is plural, so it would be better to say some men, or a man.
But who could ever be offended by some men or a man?
Men are hot!
