Actually, I think I need to slightly amend my answer. I may not admire large rings. They need to have something unique about them to admire a ring based on size. But I am flat out envious of other people's earrings if they are larger than mine and I do find that to be motivation. I thought the 1.7 ctw (I think, not weighed outside setting and are old cuts) would be the be-all, end-all. They aren't. I have DSS and I've only had them for about a year and a half. I'll stop when my earrings are larger than my head.

 Love this!!!

Heheheheh! Drops! Drops are the way to go!

Ah yes! Drops can then be larger because the base of the ear lobe doesn't get in the way. Gotcha! At the right length the curve of the edge of the diamond would contour nicely to the neck. That does sound like a better plan ;)

In seriousness, I've not yet seen drops that I *had to have*. When I reach the next size - and the last four pairs have all been at least double in size so I'm hoping to strike it rich and get to 3.4 ctw next, haha - then I was planning to turn these into drops. I just need to find drop styles that I covet first.

Yes and No. 8)

Yes because well I'm obesessed with jewelry so I always want to see what people are wearing and rocking out. Doesn't always mean carat size though. I'm very much drawn to settings and stacked looks.

No because my ering at 5ct + halo typically means I have by far the largest diamond in the room. I have only seen large diamonds when I'm overseas traveling or at a PS GTG. In my circle of friends 1ct is huge!

Mine is 3.66 but my best friend has a 6.7 carat pear It is friggin huge takes up her entire finger its crazy. The funny thing is she wants to swap as she likes emerald cut stones lol

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

I definitely compare, and notice other people's rings. My diamond is about average, or maybe a little larger, compared to most in my social circle. And that's exactly where I'd like to be -- I mean, I'd feel self-conscious if my diamond were smaller than everyone else's, I suppose (because I am that shallow :nono: ), and I'd also feel self-conscious with a big honker. Even when I see a ring that makes mine feel a bit petite, I also usually find something about other people's diamonds that means I wouldn't trade... y'know, like, the setting is too high, or there are too many crevices to get dirt in, or it's a shape that doesn't really appeal, or mine is just sparklier, or whatever. But then there are even more times when I just gaze at my diamond and think how it's exactly the right size and shape and setting for my hand, my life, and my relationship. So, even though I compare, I virtually never pine for other people's diamonds.

...though maybe that's only because I've never met another PSer in person. ;)

This mantra works great for me:
'Beauty is not a p***ing competition.'

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

I am divorced, so not currently sporting an e ring, but that may change soon. I find myself drooling over the big and beautiful stones on here. When I was about 15 (I am pushing 50 now) I had an aunt who had 3-4 ct diamonds that lit up the interior of the car. My uncle owned jewelry stores, so she was blessed. They may have been old cuts. The rings threw multi-colored fire I can still remember. They were magical. Anyhow, we were poor and I remember thinking when I grow up, I want a beautiful, elegant ring too. I DO enjoy your beauties on here as I lurk.

A few weeks ago I tried on an AMAZING euro/transitional 1.85 fiery VS1, M that a jeweler friend bought. I took it outside and watched it blaze and throw color. then I had to give it back :( A few days later I dragged my darling boyfriend in to see it, but I think it was a little over budget. Goodbye you big sparkly disco-ball *sniffle* ;( Realistically, I figure size my coming e-ring will be much more modest. He knows I like the old mine and euro and AVC chunkies. He is going to pick out the ring. I do wonder what's in store.

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

I hope you're not disappointed, moneymeister (with your man picking out the ring I mean).
It's just that having preferences for old mine, lower colours etc would be just too advanced for my man.
Perhaps you should enlist the help of your jeweller, and tell your man that he must go directly to that jeweller alone!
Elsewhere I mentioned the idea of a jewellery plan, and the idea that your jeweller would keep your jewellery plan on file - kind of like a bridal registry! Lol.
Could work for women like me, and possibly you, who have men who like to 'surprise' when they gift.

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

LaraOnline, I hear you! Great plan...I did

  • send him a list of vendors
  • Introduce him to my jeweler, who is a personal friend and has my back.
  • show him the AVC's on Good old Gold
  • The squeal thread on Pricescope (I was squealing, he was laughing).
  • A ton of setting ideas, and they have the Tacori 2620 on file at the jewelers as a dream setting for me (plain shank)

Now all I can do is wait...and wait.....and wait...did I mention waiting is HARD for a girl who looooves shiny rocks.

He is amused at my love of rocks. He spends time thinking of engagement ring torture, like proposing in a movie theater w...in the dark, and making me wait until the end of the movie to see the ring .

But when I first brought up the OEC/OMC old cut idea, he said "you mean the deep cuts with the high table on top?"... You could have pushed me over with a feather. He tends to be a perfectionist and kept talking about buying an IF rock, but I told him to slide down the scale of perfection a little and up in size a little :Up_to_something:

Well you are very lucky moneymeister!
He is attentive and interested, just what you want for a soon-to-be fiance!
I hope you are enjoying this special time in your life.

Please excuse for the mini thread jack !

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

Not any more. I still admire rings/jewelry but now I look for more 'unique' things-like james meyer style or antique pieces. A co-worker of my husband got married a few years ago and had a tiffany and co ring-I could tell-and I asked her if it was and she was surprised that I knew. My ring is bigger than hers-so I'm sure they think we spent more-but I know for a fact they spent at least 3 if not 4x what we did on my ring on hers. Her's is beautiful though.

Now I just wish I had gone with something smaller. I love my ring-everything about it really-except for the size. I'd like to down grade my 1ctw OEC studs to .75ctw or less in some sort of organic yellow gold bezel style settings-I'd like to down grade my 1.64 carat e-ring to around 1 carat (or reset it) into something more organic and james meyer in style. Same for my RHR thats just over 1ctw.

I got good deals on everything so it's hard to part with any of it. I can get more than I paid for almost all of it-but it would still cost quite a bit to replace everything so in the end it would just be a wash $ wise and my husbands pretty sentimental about most of my pieces. Still working on that one

Re: Do you secretly compare size? Finding the cause of DSS..

Sure, everyone does. But I look for size and quality. Someone may have a big rock but if it is off-color or badly cut I am not envious. Also, same with colored gems. Plus if I do not like the setting (a halo for example) size does not matter.

I ogle but don't covet.... :sun:
