it's mind boggling. those who already have limited access to healthcare are going to 1) walk around with this virus if they are asymptomatic or 2) try to care for themselves at home until it's super urgent, which could lead to a crunch at the hospitals.

we're going to pay for our own bad policies....

Exactly. Penny wise and dollar foolish. Oh the wisdom of the politicians. Holding out hope they come to the right conclusion sooner vs later.

Yes, and I think a lot of people who can't afford it and rely on self care at home would end up infecting family members or other co-workers. People don't know if they should get themselves tested since technically, this guy who relied on selfcare didn't get confirmed for having CV.

The difficult part about my partner's coworkers situation is now, several other coworkers who were working closely with him would have to get tested as well. So all of them have to find a way to pony up $3k each to get themselves tested. It's a huge financial and emotional burden for them and their families.

I really hope the politicians can find a way to support people through this, otherwise it's going to get ugly real quick.

Thank you everyone. I know this might touch all of us at some point. Death is part of life. It just feels incomplete if the family can’t come together to say good bye. It will happen one day but it doesn’t look like it will happen for awhile.

I'm so sorry @swaye2010

@swaye2010 I'm very sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family.

@swaye2010, I’m so sorry for your families loss.

@swaye2010 - I’m so very sorry for your loss.

@swaye2010 my condolences to you and your family.

I might have it but so far I don't meet the criteria for getting tested. I have mild symptoms and a low fever but no breathing issues. If I have the good fortune to get better in the next few days, I won't need to waste testing resources. If I get worse, I'll contact a doctor and follow their recommendations.

I'm just hunkered down at home and have only left to take out the trash. For myself, I feel calm and oddly disconnected but my heart goes out to anyone who is suffering during these uncertain times. Please stay safe everyone.

@swaye2010 I’m so very sorry for your loss. It’s heartbreaking to hear your aunt didn’t get a chance to say goodbye...Hugs..

@swaye2010 - I'm sorry this has happened to your family, my condolences to you and all of them.

The US government should be making the test kits available to anyone with symptoms for free as they are in lots of places around the world not doing so just means they don't care if poor people die.

@MrsBlue I hope you get well quickly without incident. Take care!

My uncle died last night from the corona virus. He was on a cruise with my Aunt and he had to be airlifted off about 10 days ago. This is the ship that has been sitting off the coast of SF bay for the last 2 weeks. He was one of the early people to test positive on the ship and because they couldn’t dock, and there were no tests, they didn’t know who had it.

My Aunt has it mildly but she was quarantined and didn’t get to say good bye. My cousin went to see him in the hospital although he was isolated and she now tested positive on Tuesday. He was going into renal failure and my cousin made a decision to pull the plug because he just wasn’t going to recover and other people needed the beds. My extended family still mostly lives in Holland except for my family and their family. There is no memorial service planned as of yet because no one can get there. I am very sad for my Aunt because they have been married for more than half century. They also have a very large business and were so involved in the community and with the schools.

I’m very sorry to hear this. I live in the Bay Area and I saw the news about someone being airlifted and I could have sworn they said it was for something else, not CV. This whole thing is awful and I’m so sorry this happened and is happening.

they don't care if poor people die but they also don't seem to understand that the virus is equal opportunity.

One of my partner's co-worker just got confirmed w CV.

The thing that angers me is how inept and expensive the Healthcare system is. The coworker had to wait 5 days before he could get tested, and then 3 more days to get his results back because the healthcare system is swamped.

They have premium insurance and the out of pocket to get tested is $3k. Whereas in other countries like Singapore it's free.

It's ludicrous how long he had to wait to get tested and results back. Plus, not everyone has that sort of money lying around, and this amount is ALREADY with a top tier insurance plan. What about people with average or no health insurance?

Alexiszoe, that is a surprising out of pocket expense for a test. What Country was that in?

@CMN, this is in Los Angeles, California. Healthcare support varies widely between different states and the types of insurance coverage your company provides.

Thanks everyone. This is all certainly paralyzing. My mother still lives in the Bay Area and she is all alone. For people who are elderly and don’t know how to use the internet very well, they are still the ones more likely to go to the grocery store for supplies and food. The generation that is most vulnerable is not the generation that grew up with the internet either. I don’t know how other families are coping with these lockdowns if they don’t live near their elderly family members In States like California.

Vera, best wishes for your niece. I hope she recovers quickly if she becomes symptomatic. Bless all of our heath care workers and emergency responders! Heroes!

Thank you @Bonfire So far she hasn't really had any symptoms so we are hoping it was a false positive. She is still staying quarantined. Definiately praying for all those wonderful souls who are in the medical field and caring for those infected.

@Bonfire , I realize this is off topic. I’m aware your daughter is a first responder. Please tell her how grateful so many of us are for her. The work she does is invaluable. One reason I‘m staying in at this time is it is so important to help keep our first responders and medical community safe. They do all they can to help us, the very least we can do is take steps to help them do their jobs and help keep them safe.

I’m sorry for the thread jack.

@swaye2010 - I live in the Bay Area and would be more than willing to help your mother with supplies and any other needs. Please let me know if you need my help and we can figure out a way for you to contact me. I'm healthy and willing to help. God bless, I am so very sorry for your loss. Take care. Q

@swaye2010 my parents and I all live in CA, though in different cities. All the online grocery delivery services are fully booked, so the only way to get food is to go out. My parents have been able to find what they need without any issues. If your mom is able to drive or walk to the store, I hope she is similarly able to get by.

I would offer to help, but I'm getting through a cold and am not stepping outside until I'm fully recovered.

@swaye2010 my heart goes out to you and your aunt. No one could have been prepared for this, and I hope the rest of you are safe and taking enough time to grieve and then to heal.

swaye2010, my deepest condolences to you.

Good friend in DC finally got conclusive test results today, after MANY days of waiting. He has it, as almost certainly do two of the other four people that were on a ski trip with him in Austria March 6-14. Those other two didn't get tested even though they have all had the same symptoms since returning. I was also supposed to be on that trip but my company begged me not to travel so I cancelled literally the day before.

He said they confirmed he didn't have any other respiratory condition before they would move on with this test, which is why it all took so long.

Good news is he's strong and healthy, as is the case with our other friends who are affected now, and will probably be right as rain in the next few days.

@swaye2010 So very, very sorry to hear about your uncle! That is just heartbreaking that his wife couldn't see him! ;(

That was what health insurance told him too. But it turns out, when he went to get tested, certain elements of the testing and treatment is NOT covered - so he ended up having to pay $3k.

That's very good to know. I had to look that up since I knew the government said they are paying for the tests as of March 18. Like Missy, we got an email from our insurance company saying they will cover the test. From this article below, it looks like you have to go where your insurance network covers, plus if they give any other services, that would not be automatically covered other than by whatever your policy covers. So for example. if I went to the emergency room because I was sick and they gave me the test, the test should be covered but the ER visit and any meds or treatment would be covered under the regular terms of my policy.

I am not certain, but I think in my county, the only places doing the tests are the health department and urgent care places (for those not serious enough to be admitted to the hospital), and I am not sure how that would work in terms of insurance.

As of Friday, there was only one positive test in my county, a good many negatives, and several results should be back this week. I expect as the new tests are more readily available and quicker to process, we'll see a steep increase in numbers over the next couple of weeks. So I would assume there are more cases than one already.

My cousin (lives about 30 miles away) had 3rd-link contact with a coronavirus patient about 12 days ago. She had been quarantining just for safety.

Today, she woke up with a 102 degree fever and an awful cough. Called her doctor and doctor said with the PPE situation what it is now and testing not significantly changing course of treatment for her, that she should stay home and treat symptoms and monitor -- and to assume presumptive positive for coronavirus, and to call the ER if anything becomes serious.

She hasn't had any contact with anyone since that first 3rd link contact,
