....love the thrill of the purchasing process rather than the end result? It seems that some people are always upgrading, changing settings etc.

I know I upgraded lots of times. For me it was always trying to reach the next carat size up. I was never happy with what I had. I was always yearning for a bigger diamond. Now I don't have one at all.

I'm not judging. Don't beat me up!

a) people who crave the attention a hunt brings
b) people who crave the attention new bling brings
c) fickle pickles
d) people who have ring dysmorphic disorder (and imagine or invent "flaws" that don't exist)
e) genuine hobbyists who create new projects for the love of jewelry making itself
f) shrinky dinks w/ constant upgrade fever
g) folks fighting back boredom and/or denial of tough life problems w/shopping

And anyone wondering which I think *they* are (though I'd wonder why they care!) -- just assume I think you're an "E" type.

Yes!!! I've upgraded myself, but it seems like some people who post on here are never satisfied. It is always on to something bigger or that seems better or that is the "newest thing". It is easy to catch the bug when you hang around pricescope! Not a problem if you can afford it I guess but it can be a bit obsessive.

I've never upgraded but I'd LOVE to. I definitely suffer from DSS but I haven't done anything about it. Maybe for a big anniversary down the road.

What happened to your diamond Maisie? You've had some lovely rings, but I've lost track after the pretty YG ring (I think it was yellow gold?)

Good question, Deco's answers work for me. And anywhere you fall from answers A-G, I think as long as you can afford it, go for it. Most of it really falls in the category of "hobby" anyway.

Oddly enough, the years here have only cemented that my set is my set for life. If I ever strike the lotto, I'd go nuts having fun with RHRs. But my e-ring/wedding set still makes me happy, go figure, since there are many, many other settings that I find much more aesthetically appealing!

btw, TGuy has known that I've read PS for years. If I became a fickle pickle and went nuts with my e-ring, he'd probably ban this site for me! And I'd rather read all the interesting stuff around here (since it's also been my water cooler for years...priceless) than go on a mad hunt upgrading. Worse, I'd be really bummed if I liked the new setting less, since technically it would carry no real sentimentality vs my "real" e-ring/wedding ring.

HA that about sums it up, although I do think most of the peeps who upgrade/have projects constantly going are the E types. Not that there aren't some of each type, of course!

I've had my e-ring for almost 5 years-does that count? Me and the hubs move slow so we were engaged for 2+ years before we actually tied the knot!

I wonder if, when the sentimentality is gone by upgrading the original, that is just easier to look at it as an object and the quest for perfection begins. I look at my ring now and it's not perfect, but it's what I was proposed to with, so I love it. If I gave that up for bigger, then it would be simply be a piece of jewelry, and I'd be MUCH more particular in my quest to get EXACTLY what I want. That would just spell trouble. And since I have had many "favorite" rings over the years here, I can imagine that I could be persuaded to change again and again.

ETA: ** I should mention that I did have the head changed out on my ring to set the diamond lower into the existing setting. So it's not exactly FACTORY ISSUE. More like 95% original, 5% changed. No PRIZE for moi!

Yes, I think that might have been part of it. There was no sentiment attached to any of my rings. I chose them all myself. If my husband had been the one to design and buy my first ring I would probably have been much more attached to it and not wanted to change it. Ah well, you live and learn.

I've seen all of the above. But, this is THAT kind of place, after all. Stagnant bling just won't do on a site for diamonds and gems, will it? There must be some lust of lovely objects to keep the boat afloat.

It's the serial upgraders of e-rings (sometimes even before the nuptials) that make me go "Hmmmmm.....wonder what's really going on here?"

Pretty much the way I feel about it. I'm fully aware of the flaws of my ring. But I love what it represents to me and that is priceless.

I tend to obsessively research potential settings/designs and I usually wait a long time before deciding on a setting. My spinel popped out of its original setting after 5 yrs. It was a blessing in disguise because my tastes had changed and the ring wasn't comfortable to wear. I don't sentimental over jewelry so I would change a setting in future if it became uncomfortable to wear or if my taste changes. Making changes is a chore for me rather than fun so I'd rather take my time and love what I choose.

When I was upgrading it was all about the stone. The setting was secondary. When people post about new settings and say how unhappy they are with the workmanship I can never see what they mean. Maybe i'm not detail orientated.

This forum has created a monster in me... My bucket list is short but I'm not resting well on waiting to check off my two items...

A RHR - 5 stone all the same size around the 1.50-1.75 ct range and a DBTY bracelet... Thinking 5-7 .10 pts round brilliants... I really wanted AVR but I'm am chicken little that I will lose it.

I am addicted to this sight watching others make these things happen and I'm in awe of the dollars spent on many of those projects.... Wow!

I do think I learn from watching every project and hope when I do make it happen for myself I can use those threads to help me make the best choices the first time... I hope I have done my only reset on my e-ring which was caused when I found PS!
