Do you ever think that some PS'ers....

Hi

Junebug--I have no desire to ask anyone if they can afford what they are buying. However, when you see people buying many 4 or 5 mm stones or stones in the same color over and over again or just on a buying spree, I think you can question the why of it.
The person who sold the rubilite ring did buy many stones, but until her emergency surfaced, you would not know. After the fact would not be the time for a lesson. Maybe, thats how I view it. We have true collectors on these boards, some for 20yrs. They will tell you the mistakes that they made. I see this as a way to help, not be nosey. They do ask in the diamond forum if they can afford more or even make suggestions to help manage costs. Its viewed as being helpful over there.

Deb(I learned no Debbie)- I have only seen you as a thoughtful buyer who researches the object of her desires. You were not anyone I had in mind when I wrote the last post. Your last ring is beautiful. Good luck with it.

Precur-- I enjoy reading most posts even for buyers that may be overbuying. Because I see that the temptations are too much for some doesn't mean I am pointing my finger in judgment on them. Most survive it all, and I assure you, I don't lose sleep over it. I wonder why you are so defensive? Its not personal and I like the people. Buy what you like!

KristyDarling, I can't wait to see your reset!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fickle Pickles are great because it means more eye candy for moi!

Oh goodness, the last thing we need is for PSers to be questioning the way other PSers spend their money, and whether they have the cash to be doing it.

Don't some of us get that enough in real life? DH and I don't share our financial details with anyone IRL, it's nobody's business, and we certainly don't question the way others choose to spend their money. But still we get the odd "Oh my, another trip to Europe?" comment, accompanied by some insinuation that we probably can't really afford it from random people in our lives. I don't need that from PSers, too.

It's a bad habit to count other people's money, and I don't want that to become something we do around here.

I understand the point you are making, but I operate under the assumption that each of us here is an adult, and we are capable of deciding where and on what we want to spend our money. One individual may not see the point of multiple purchases of the same type of 4-5mm gemstone, but I would assume that those gemstones give the buyer pleasure. There are very few items people talk about on PS that are truly essentials: diamonds certainly are not, and neither are gemstones, pearls or watches. All those things could be considered frivolous, whether it's a single engagement ring, or multiple pink spinels/tourmalines/OEC's etc. And you know, no matter what kind of contingency fund someone has for emergencies, it's still always possible for something unexpected to happen. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition. (Monty Python reference there)

Pricescope itself is definitely a passive enabler. Or not so passive maybe. It's hard to break the spell, for sure. Someone posted this recently and I thought it was interesting--something along the lines of... 'sometimes the excitement is just in the wanting, but not so much in the having'. I thought it was pretty spot on for me sometimes.

re: serial upgrading, I did I think 2 before getting married and then one after but I've had that stone now for almost 6(?) years. I think about upgrading it all the time but I really love it. And I still have my original 'set'..TG!! Which is kind of ironic I guess.

KD...so good to see you on here again girl. We really need to try to get together soon. And can't wait to see this new ring, hehe. You know I wanna wear it!

Annette, I don't feel a need to defend myself. I really don't understand why you're talking about this person who needed to sell their ring. You say you would like to help people, so please help me understand why you are talking about them. It sounds like they already learned their lesson. I think if they read what you wrote, it will just make them feel worse. Am I missing something here?

I second this.

I third this.

Yes I guess that some might like the thrill of the purchase more than having it. I imagine that people that upgrade a lot are just wishy-washy. They get bored with their rings. They change their mind. I like to imagine that it's that, rather than thinking people bought something they really didn't want that much.

I plan to keep my ER and get an AVC in the future (as a RHR or second wedding set). My plan is to get a small AVC and gradually upgrade since I can't afford a carat and a half right now. I have been trying to think of ways that I can do that and not waste any money on settings (either get a peg head or get a setting that has its own upgrade policy). I don't think that this would be frivolous upgrading. I guess that I could be tempted to judge people who upgrade or buy a lot, but I don't know anything about them and it's none of my business, really. If I think anything about another person's bling, it's because I'm jealous. Mostly though, I really like people sharing on here. I like the eye candy.

Thanks Gypsy -- for thinking of me & posting an amazing duo of finds.

Despite being away on holiday & off my computer 99% of the time, I did manage to see them in the nick of time -- a couple of hrs. before the sale was over but decided against because they weren't *quite* Lucida-ish to my eye. Could have been stunners in person but feared I'd get a *settled* feeling about them rather than a LOVE LOVE LOVE feeling. One day, Lucida. ONE FINE DAY.

If I come across anything, I will post it where I think you will see it.

Stop questioning how PS's spend their money! You guys just don't have the guts to stand in front Harry Winston, Cartier, and VC&A and accost the customers about why they spent so much money. While you're at it why don't you ask them how they or their husbands got all the money. You think they got it by "doing something"?, by inheriting it, by building a "better mousetrap" or by exploiting the global workforce in the global economy all around the world. You want to be outraged about jewelry leave the little fish alone. But I think you don't you have the guts to do that as I said. The rich deserve our sycophancy. They deserve it. Just like they "deserve" everything else without question. Instead it's easier to pick on people who actually made their money or are making it. Shame on you.

I am none of the above. I don't upgrade, I keep buying more. I'm just plain greedy.[/quote

I love this Madame Bijoux , cracked me up  .

I have to say I love looking at everyone's jewels/upgrades/ remodelling etc. Jewellery is a very personal thing and it would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing. Having said that as far as some people never being happy DSS, I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting a change. If the bank account allows I say go for it. Especially after the kids private school fees are up to date

I have my original er from 22 years ago and also my wedding band. Back then when you got a ring it was very exciting and you really did'nt care about cut/clarity etc because it wasn't something that was important to most people like it is now. I say most people because most were not as educated about diamonds then. I wear my wedding ring everyday and would never part with it. My er on the other hand I do not wear anymore it's in a safe place since I upgraded to a larger stone (Ideal Cut).

I could never change or reset the er for sentimental reasons. The upgrade had always been something I new I wanted to do and I still want to upgrade one more time to get my preferred setting. Like Diamondseeker, I too, love the plain solitaire setting. So, eventually when I do change for the 3rd and final time that will definitely be it. So many of you have such beautiful jewels and it's a pleasure to show them off. Be proud ladies.

Pricescope is a great place to chill out and relax for a while, to have some me time enjoying one of my favourite things - Diamonds

I am a big fan of the hunt and enjoy collecting jewelry (vast majority of it second-hand). I've made mistakes - ending up with things I thought I loved at the time and ended up barely wearing or overpaid. I trade, switch around at times and keep and enjoy most of what I buy...after having learned from my mistakes.
I much enjoy reading about and viewing pictures of other peoples' purchases, upgrades, re-sets, etc. I've learned a lot reading about their triumphs...or mistakes, glitches, regrets.
I've never felt a sense of judgment towards anybody here. I don't know many 'jewelry nuts' in real life and it is pure enjoyment for me to view your sagas and pictures of your projects. Sometimes I feel intimidated because I usually take crappy pictures of my beautiful things...and my blingees don't get much kudos here. :naughty:

Gee, Danny, I was going to go out and do what you suggested, but the directions got me confused. I think you have to go over them again for me.

By the way, I didn't question how Pricescopers spent their money, but I thought that if you were giving everybody advice, I should take it, too.

Now you said we didn't have the guts to stand outside some of the big jewelry stores and question the patrons, but then you say, "while you're at it why don't you ask them how they or their husbands got all the money".

If we didn't have the guts to stand there, how can we ask about how they or their husbands got all the money?

And, come to think of it, do you really think it is wise to ask total strangers how they got all their money? Don't you think some of them might be offended? I don't mean to be critical, Danny, but I am not sure that you have thought out this plan thoroughly. The more I think about it, the less I like it.

I am very flexible, though. So if you can think of a way for me me to ask people how they got their money without being intrusive, I will be more than happy to try to implement your plan!

I'm certainly not judging anyone. I sometimes wish I had more money so I could buy big bling.. but then I realise it would just make me get on the upgrading wagon again and that would make me miserable.
