do I need a prong check?

I've seen some posts that say that people should get their prongs checked on their engagement ring every year. Is that correct? I've had my ring for a year; do I need to go to a jeweler to get my prongs checked? (I haven't noticed any problems.)

People also say, "Go to your local jeweler," but Leon made my ring and I live in NYC. Am I supposed to ask Leon to do it? It doesn't seem like something he'd be into, unless the ring had a specific problem for him to fix. If not, can anyone suggest me a good go-to "local jeweler"? I don't trust the ones in my immediate neighborhood.

Go to any nice reputable jeweler to browse. When the sales person comes over ask them to do a prong check and clean your rings for you while you browse. If they find ANY issue, make sure they show you what the problem is, that you CONFIRM with your own eyes through a loop that there is an issue, before you commit to any work.

Oh and ONLY get work done at a place with an in-house bench. Not places that have only off-site benches for repairs. So if the place you are in doesn't do the work onsite. Thank them very much for their time and leave. And get the work done elsewhere. :wavey:

I have had my mother's ring on my finget for 11 years and she it on hers for another 30 and never once had the prongs checked. I never had the prongs checked on my enagement ring either.

You can walk into any jeweler and just have them check it. Me. From time to time I shake the ring near my ear and listen to hear if there is any noise to see if it is loose. You can actually take a look at your ring yourself as you know your ring better than anyone else.

But if you don't anyone can look at prongs and wont charge you so find a jeweler that has a good recommendation that is convenient and drop it by. Not necessary to go back to where you had it made.

Yes. If they want your business now or in the future, they'll be more than happy to do a prong check.

I got my first e-ring from a shop in the Diamond District. The wedding band came from an antique jewelry store off Gramercy Park that's no longer there. About once a year, I would pop in to the store where I got the e-ring for a browse, a prong check and a steam cleaning - of both rings. I suggest finding a nice, reputable-looking store in the DD and making that your go-to for your ring's yearly check-up. Then refer to Gypsy's advice if they spot a problem.

Steven Kirsch made my ring and encouraged me to bring it in to get it checked and cleaned (I'm also in NYC). I'd definitely check with Leon first, I don't see why he wouldn't want to check your ring.

I cannot think of ONE single reason NOT to get your ring checked. It's just not something I personally do. If I'm at my local B&M, whom I adore, I'll have them toss it in their US since it's more powerful than mine. But, i've been wearing my ER 24/7 for almost 20 years and haven't had any issues. It's also 6-prong - that helps!

Thank you all for your advice.
If anyone has any recommendations for a reputable jeweler in the diamond district or anywhere in Manhattan for repairs and such, I would welcome your input.

IDJ is right in the center of 47h street just google their address. Be sure to tell them your a PS member and want to frequent them. I am sure they will check it for you. At least its some type of connection

Your first priority should be Leon if that's feasible for you. My advice would be to avoid any local jewellers for this matter. And yes everyone should go for prong check at least once a year.
