Do Americans pay Duty if they buy jewelry from a Canadian?

I cannot for the life of me find this information and thought another PSer might know.

When an American buys a jewelry item from someone outside the US, particularly Canada, what duties or taxes the buyer pays upon import?

Any tips on selling to Americans from Canada?

I don't think so. I bought a ring from a Canadian seller on Diamond Bistro and it just came straight to me. I've ordered clothing from international websites before and never paid duty on that, either.

Nope. VAT/duty is a foreign concept for Americans. When buying online you only pay sales tax if you are in the same state as the seller.

We have to pay a whopping 20% VAT plus another 5% in duty in the UK for jewellery...

DD - my understanding it that there are no import taxes into the USA.

No. What most are required to pay (but don't) is a form of sales tax to their state. In my state it is called use tax and is equal to the sales tax.

Thanks guys! Good to know!

I assumed there was something and so on my listings of items put a note that US buyers are responsible for any duties or taxes yadda yadda but I guess I needn't have.

If there are any Canadians out there I would love to hear if you attached any particular customs forms when you shipped or if you just sent it and filled in the information that is ready-attached in Expresspost and the like!

If it helps, we also pay more income tax I am in a 40% tax bracket for a good chunk of my income. I earn $20k more than my husband but only take home about $10k more, Ouchie.

But, in CA everyone in the family is still covered if both adults loose their jobs, right? My friend's husband (American) lost his and they were on a *reduced program* and only paid $400 a month for medical insurance and it was about to go up to $700 a month b/c union benefits were running out! Most end up just not having insurance at all.

True... the year + of paid maternity leave was nice (although you guys get paid more than us), and knowing that health care is 100% free is nice too. Not so sure about education - I think it's pretty poor given what we spend and I'm hoping to earn enough to opt out and go private. I'll also keep our labour laws please!

Taxes are ick though - 40% income tax , and a 50% top rate!

MC that is scary! Yeah, if you are living on the street you get medical care, abd top care too. And if unemployed you can collect benefits for a long time, I think over a year at 40% of you salary (with a cap) or wefare if you are desperate, though it is not a huge amount. Recently our province did start making people pay health insurance though I think it is a sliding scale. We pay $144 for the whole family but my employer covers it.

But we pay for it Taxes are much higher here.

Pandora where I live the schools are very good and free. Not uni though.

Here you get exactly the same health care where you are destitute on the street or a multi-millionaire. You can get private healthcare which is great with chronic conditions - like if you need an operation for a herniated disc or something, but for acute care there really is no point.

When I had my daughter, I saw a gazillion specialists, had 4 scans including 2 specialist scans, forceps delivery, 2 days in ICU with 5 blood transfusions and then a week in hospital in a private room and it cost us a grand total of £20 in parking fees.

Private patients get the exact same doctors, nurses and deliver in the same delivery suites - the postnatal rooms just have nicer food and bigger TVs!

We do have prescription charges - I think it's £7 per item, I get a lot of them so I pay £100 a year and then everything is included in that.
