DH is getting more into diving and is thinking about getting insurance.

Anybody here dive and have insurance?

If so, any recommendations?

Thanks sonnyjane - that's different than the one DH was looking at (I think the one he was looking at had to do with PADI - I know nothing about diving so I'm going by memory).

Yes, he should get DAN (the one sonnyjane linked above). It is the most comprehensive and most widely accepted. DH and I have been on a few dive trips that require DAN insurance specifically, so there ya go.

My health insurance doesn't exclude diving so I don't have any additional insurance. I don't have any dive trips scheduled so I'm not too worried about it.

I'm a certified search and rescue diver and life insurance is really expensive outside of what my employer offers. I wish someone would have told me that before I took the course.

I suppose it depends on how much and what type of diving you're doing to determine whether or not dive insurance makes sense for you.

DH and I are both certified rescue divers and we dive pretty frequently in the cold, usually rough waters on the California coast, and I wouldn't do it without insurance. While our health insurance also doesn't exclude diving, most regular health insurances won't completely cover the cost of using a recompression chamber should the need arise, and those costs could be pretty exorbitant depending on where you are.

Dive insurance is most prevalent when diving outside of the U.S., absolutely, but the extra $100/year is worth the peace of mind and reassurances for me. We dive way too much to take the health/safety risks lightly.

Wow I had no idea it was that inexpensive. Makes sense to have it then. I don't dive very frequently - in fact it's been an embarrassingly long time since I logged my last dive, but if I start up again I'll look into it for sure.

Thanks everyone.

DH said it *was* DAN he was looking at for himself. So now he feels even better about it.

The one thing we couldn't figure out is whether the price was per month - if it's per year, though, like you guys are saying, then there's absolutely no reason not to do it...although I still want DH to call his regular insurance company so he can find out whether they exclude diving or not. Just to be informed, and because it may influence which of the plans he ends up getting.

Thanks again! :wavey:

Yep, it's per year! They also do a family insurance coverage type of thing and the cost pp goes down even more when you do it that way.
