Diamond Weight Vs. Size

I''ve been looking for a diamond and have talked to a WF rep. We are pressing on my budget for a 3 carat, but he sent me a few within my range plus 1 that was actually like 2.75 carats but was actually larger in size then the 3 carats. He says if it''s eye clean it sounds like it could be what I''m looking for as it has a better color.

Does the fact that it weighs less but is bigger take away from the diamond at all?

Regardless of the weight of the stone, you need to find out the measurements for diameter, table, depth, crown angle, and pavilion angle. If the 2.75 was larger than the 3.0, I can almost guarantee that one of them is poorly cut.

Some general guidelines would be to look for:

table 54-57

depth 60-62

crown angle 34-35

pavilion angle 40.6-41

A 3 ct. stone should be around 9.4mm.

In addition, look for GIA or AGS lab certificates as they are the most accurate.

couldnt say it much better but i would like to add that looking bigger and actually being bigger are two different things...

Ditto - you don''t want a diamond that ''faces up'' much larger than it should for it''s weight. The cut therefore isn''t great and wouldn''t be as sparkly. A well cut stone will look bigger anyway than a poorer cut stones due to it''s superior light performance. I would much rather have a fabulously cut 2.75ct than a poorly cut 3.0ct stone anyday.

Are you sure that''s the right link? That''s a Bluenile stone, not a WF stone. No way of telling from those stats, however I would aim for a better cut grade.

Try looking at GOG or WF, they have much more info on their stones and you can make an informed decision. I would honestly take the advice from a WF rep than to try picking a fancy by the numbers from the BN site.

Well a WF rep sent me the specs on the diamonds and when I searched them this one showed up as a blue nile diamond (same exact numbers). WF doesn''t have it in their possession.

WF would need to call that diamond in if possible for evaluation, they won''t steer you wrong. Ditto the advice above given however the numbers given only work for round diamonds, not Princess.
