Diamond Size Question?

Do diamonds generally look bigger in the setting? I purchased a 1.37C round and more than one person that saw the stone in person before it was set said it looks bigger in the setting. For lack of better reference the setting is a typical 4 prong tiffany style setting. I am not sure if cut/color/clarity come into play, but it is excellent/E/VS1 - GIA.

I think it depends on the setting- I usually think that diamonds look bigger when set up a little higher or if the prongs are substantial enough to add some area to the face of the diamond.

This may be crazy, but I also think it's a perspective thing.. looking at a loose diamond laying on the counter, the diamond looks small in comparison, but when set into a small piece of jewelry as the focal point, it's much bigger relatively. Does that make any sense?!

I agree with this. Many times if setting a diamond high- as opposed to bezel, or having it laying on your hamnd, it will appear larger. Also- I think that the prongs add a little to the edges of the stone, creating the illusion of added size.

Makes 100% sense! Looking at a diamond on a large flat area as opposed to in a focal point oriented setting sounds like it would make a visual differnce for sure! Thanks!!!

an optical illusion! I think the higher set- the "bigger" it appears...
