Ok, just to satisfy my own curiosity, does anyone have a pic of an 0.8ct and a 1.0ct side by side? I am starting to wonder if my 0.8ct will look closer to a 0.5ct than 1.0ct?!

Or, for that matter, an 0.8 and an 0.9, or 0.9 and 1.0?
I'm curious about this too... anyone???

Hello all,

I see that grape gravity and John Pollard posted the picture with the princess cut diamonds, but I was wondering if anyone has any comparisons of emerald cut or asscher cut diamonds? A comparison of any size will help. Thanks so much!!

Katie
Agreed! I''d LOVE to see some asschers- especially on a hand shot!

The round cut posts are great, though! Thanks for the hard work.

What a great thread! I would love to see a .80 round next to a .90 or a 1 ct.

I''ll third that request to see a comparison of the near-1 carat diamonds. :)

I''m new here, but I''m planning on buying a ring very soon, and am curious as to what .9 carat and .95 carat diamonds look like in comparison to 1 carat. Can most people even tell the difference? There are some beautiful .9''s and .92''s out there, and I might rather get her one of those than sacrifice color or clarity to stay within my budget.

No.

If you can find a great cut stone just under the carat mark, go for it. They can be great buys!

Thanks for your reply, Ellen.

I had always heard that you could save money by buying just under the carat mark, and I had always imagined that to mean .98 or .99 carat stones. But now that I'm actually searching through loose diamonds, I find that there are a ton of great stuff - as I said - in the.90 to .92 range... and I'm wondering if .90 is still "just under the carat mark" or if the diamonds might start to look at bit small at that size. .90 is probably as low as I want to go.

I guess an obvious solution to this is to get out to a B&M and start looking at the various sizes in person, loose and in settings. And I will go do that soon. I've only been at this a few days so far, so I'm just getting my feet in the water. But I'm glad to have found such a great bunch of people, so early in my first diamond-buying journey. :)

I''ve seen 0.91ct diamonds advertised as "1 carat diamond" at a B&M jewler. Not sure if this is the industry standard tho.

for any size diamond, go online somewhere (GOG, WF, BN, etc) and look up a diameter/width of an ideal cut stone (just find one example). Then find the diameter/width of the one you want to compare it to. That gives you an idea of the width difference, then in terms of area difference you can easily work that out (pi r^2), and then get a % difference, then you''ll see just how small some of those sizes differences really are =D

P.S. sorry, i''m an engineer who can''t help doing the number analysis haha

I couldn't help myself because I'm also an engineer and an even easier way to do it is to divide the smaller diameter by the larger diameter and then square the result, (d1/d2)^2. That tells you what percentage of the larger diamond the smaller diamond is. For example, comparing a 0.8ct to a 1.0ct (approx) gives

(6.0/6.40)^2 = 0.878
So face up, a 0.8ct looks like almost 88% of a 1.0ct, not the 80% you would expect from a 0.80ct diamond.

For a 0.9ct compared to 1.0

(6.2/6.40)^2 = 0.938
So face up, a 0.90ct looks like almost 94% of a 1.0ct, not the 90% you would expect from a 0.90ct diamond.

I threw in a 1" block so you can get a feel for the actual size.

Hi LynnB,
Great pic for the two stone comparison. I am looking for a diamond right now and comparing the color differences vs. sizes. I saw one thread that said between H and J, you can see yellow in J and I was concerned about that. After seeing your pic, I absolutely agrees with you that no visible difference to me; however, the size does matter. Now I am convinced that I would spend the money on size vs. one color upgrade. Thanks!

If anyone can photoshop this comparison into one pic, it would be most appreciated! Comparison between 1.23 ct and 1.62 ct stones--already set.

The engineers are on board! Very informative indeed! Thanks, guys!

But perceptions of on-finger size wd vary with finger width/shape... Stones tend to look bigger on slender fingers...

A couple people were asking about .90 compared to 1.0ct diamonds.

My computer is acting up so I am having trouble inserting the image, and/or removing the text (so just ignor the captions meant for my grandmother!)

But here are two stones side by side. They are both 1ct, but significantly different faceup sizes:

Left 6.5mm (1ct size)
Right 6.1mm (more like .85 or .90ct size)

This is helpful. I would like to see a 1.25 ct compared to a 1.50 ct...
