It''s not at all unusual in Britain, I know as many women with gemstone e-rings as those with just diamonds. Anything goes, I''ve seen opal centres, tanzanites, but sapphire/ruby/emerald are the most common. About the only thing I''ve never seen is pearls. I had an emerald centre in the e-ring from my first marriage.
I have seen some gorgeous engagement rings though that were a gemstone with diamond accents. I love Nicole Ritchie''s sapphire engagement ring. I would have taken something like that, but I think that maybe I could do something like that for a RHR, maybe my guy could do that for my wedding present from him, I''m allowed to dream right?
It all really comes down to personal preference. I don''t think that either is better than the other, but I definitely wanted a diamond for my first e-ring, but after four years I was almost willing to wear a twist tie
Well, I think it is pretty cool, very different and unique! A long, long time back, before I was dating my DH and dating another guy, I thought I wanted a garnet center stone for an e-ring. We were talking of getting engaged and didn''t have any money, so we definitely couldn''t afford a nice diamond. Then I met my hubby and while we were dating, I started envisioning a big diamond and channel-set diamonds next to it. That became my "dream ring".
Then I got lucky...we got engaged and that what he gave me!!
But I still like the colored stone idea as well. Like Cinnabar was saying, I''ve seen it done alot more frequently in Europe, where they don''t seem as hooked on the whole huge, honkin'' diamond thing like we are!
Just make sure your girl doens''t mind a colored gemstone. Some women really only want a diamond. I say go for the colored gemstone, just make sure it''s of high quality & the setting is high quality too. I can imagine a colored gemstone would look super with a setting with little diamonds around it, or a diamond halo!
HMmm... well, I am pretty partial to the colored stone. Yet, when I first started looking I was stuck on a diamond. But then I fell in love with COLOR!!!!! There are some very beautiful diamond e-rings on this site, no doubt about that. But there are a lot of people that are also in love with their colored stones as well. I have also seen a lot of celebrities going the gemstone route lately.
I beleive that ORGINALLY the e-ring was a colored gem.. so I feel... classic... LOL... But I still drool over kaleigh, Mara and Cflutist rings.. (and a lot of others) here on Pscope.
I think that a common misconception is that if it is a gemstone... then it a cheap engagement ring... (excuse me while I roll around on the floor laughing)
I was a bit sckeptical at first on how people would react... but just... Friday, I was in the bank and the teller sayd "OH MY GOD is that your engagement ring? It is so beautiful and different.. that is really neat and original.." Well.. I beamed.. just as any woman does when someone compliments them on their eye candy.
So I think that it is personal preferenc.e... and I think that it has to do a lot of personality and whether she would like a coloured stone.. but I DEFINTELY DO NOT think that an e-ring has to be a diamond.
Please be aware that some of the better colored gemstones that have historically been used in e-rings are more expensive than a high quality diamond on a per carat basis. Who would want to downgrade to a diamond... when you have one of those.
