I was given a loose diamond today by my aunt in law.... I am wondering if its real. Are there any ways to tell at home if its real? Thanks

Hi

Well I wish it was simple to gauge, only expert diamond gemologist with the help of tool can determine if fake or real, however you mentioned that your aunt in law gave you the loose stone, I think it should be real considering your close one gave you.

Per google:

Put the stone in front of your mouth and fog it like you would a mirror. If it stays fogged for a couple seconds, it’s probably a fake. A real diamond disperses the heat instantaneously so by the time you look at it, it has already cleared up, or if it happens to be a little dirty, it still clears much faster than a fake. Use a stone you know is real next to the suspect stone and fog both. You can watch how the real one stays clear while the fake one fogs over, plus if you breathe on them repeatedly, you will see condensation start to build up on the fake, it fogs more with with each puff, while the real one is still clean and clear.

FYI I just tried this on my real diamond and on a CZ they both stayed fogged almost equal time..the CZ just a tad longer...both stones are similar in size :wink2:

I've tried this before as well and it works much better if the diamond is freshly cleaned.

Do you have a loupe? Most real diamond will have visible inclusions under magnification.

If it is an ideal cut round brilliant you can use the reading test. Put it upside down over an ink dot and if you can see the dot it's not a diamond. Google for pics. This is about as definitive a test as you can do at home and even it's not perfect as certain diamond cuts will window (show the dot through the stone as if you were looking through a glass window). Just about anything will window at extreme angles.

The fog test is real but there are a ton of other factors. Any stone can fog/not fog under the right conditions but under any given set of conditions the CZ always fogs more. You really need a known diamond, a known CZ, and a known Moissanite and then you decide whether your stone fogs more or less than your benchmark stones. It's kind of useless in real life as by the time you convince a jeweler to let you play with three comparable CZ/Moissanite/diamond they will just suggest using the diamond tester.

If you have a loupe and know what to look for you can rule out Moissanite and if you see flaws you'll know it's not a CZ as they are usually flawless. But that doesn't rule out other natural stones or certain synthetics. And while you're asking your jeweler how to interpret it...they'll pull out the diamond tester. You get the idea.

Hi,

Take it up to the mall and go to the jewelry stores there. They have a diamond tester, and can tell you right away if its real. I have done this many times and have never even received any indication they were annoyed when asked to test. Just tell them the same story you told us here.

I have since bought my own diamond tester, but would still use the above for double checking.

Most cubic zirconias are D white. Unless you get a very deliberately well-cut one, they probably have shallow crown, big table, messy symmetry and faceting, and not H&A pattern. (There are tinted ones in the I to P range, but they are far more rare and not found in regular stores.)

Moissanite RB is not cut like a diamond. It has double refraction (Google for pics) and probably also has slight murkiness and/or a green tint. The fire from Moissanite does not look like a diamond. The only exceptions to this, imo, are the latest Old European Cut Moissanites.

Diamonds can have many looks. But a bluish tint with a slightly hazy look is usually cz.

(Plus what the others said.)

I did the window or test and I couldn't see anything at all. I can see a small feather inclusion on the side near the girdle too. I'm taking it in today so fingers crossed :)

I took it in and its real. Its .40 of a carat too! Good color and really good clarity

There you go. Isn't it so much quicker and easier to have someone use the right tool to verify? Congrats on the family diamond.

How nice! Any ideas of how you might set it?

I have no idea actually. Its crossed my mind to sell it to build my perfect ring, it wasnt anything his aunt was attatched too, she got it back cause she scrapped some gold and she didnt want it. I just dont know lol
