Hi everyone -- first, this is such an awesome site with so many helpful posts and comments!

I am looking for some help with an engagement ring! My girlfriend and I have spent a little bit of time looking at different diamonds and settings and she has decided on a couple of things.

As far as the setting, she loves the pave-micropave with cathedral setting. A link to her favorite is below.

In terms of diamonds, that is where I am having difficulty. She is looking at a round diamond, 2 - 2.5 carats (leaning more towards 2.5) which I don't think is outside my price range. I would like the total cost of the diamond and setting to be around $20,000 but would be flexible within a few several thousand more. From a clarity perspective, she would like it to be eye clean, seeing small inclusions would be okay as long as they weren't alarmingly huge (does this mean SI2 and better). I really don't know what color to stick to. She doesn't want the diamond to be noticeably yellow or yellow when compared to the diamonds on her setting. Does this mean J or higher? Or should I be looking at G-H-I?

Any help that anyone could give would be much appreciated. I don't think I'm going to be able to find a setting that will fit that size of diamond online so I am wondering if I will have to get it custom made. Is this difficult to do? Thanks for all of your help.

You are off to a good start and the fact that you are flexible as far as color and clarity is great.

The 2ct - 2.5 t mark (I assume you are looking at only rounds?) will have wide price differentials depending on factors of color, clarity, cut and fluorescence. I would advise you that the single most important aspect (especially in the G-H-I Si color range)will be top-tier cut. That said -

Read this link:

then this link:

Then these two:

https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/holloway-cut-advisor

https://www.pricescope.com/journal/aset-–-diamond-evaluation-tool

It is a LOT to read, but you will be better informed than most anyone you know.

Happy Hunting
