I have a quick question, as I was wiping the diamond dry from cleaning the ring, I noticed that when I put my finger on the girdle and sofly go back and forth, the diamond also moves back and forth. It doesn''t turn in a whole circle. It just moves forward and then it''s stuck, and then you can move it back. The movement space is very very small. But definitely noticible. And when I hold the ring and shake it, I can hear a tiny rattle. Is this normal? Or is it suppose to be like this? If I gently try to move the stone up and down, it down''t move.. I think the prongs are holding it down. But going left and right it will.

Please let me know if this is normal.

Since it''s 4 prongs on a 3.05 carat diamond, I''m having second thoughts on if it''s safe or not. Maybe I should get 6 Prongs? This is scary. What if the stone falls out!

Hi Leota,
Get the stone tightened as soon as you have a chance. It will get looser as time goes on and a prong may catch and lift. This is a very easy job for a good goldsmith. Stones do get loose once in a while. Have a great New Years! Cindy

I was wondering... is the stone not supposed to have any movement at all?

It is the stuller solstice 4 prong setting..

Do you think it's from the ultrasonic cleaner when I cleaned it? Cuz I actually forgot about it and left it in there for 30 minutes or so. Or was it just set like this? Cuz this ring is new? So I dont' think it got loose frome everyday wear.

thanks!!

Leota,

I think that you need to call or email GOG and tell them that your stone is loose. It is brand new, and it should NOT be loose. The reason I am insisting on this is because I, too, had a problem this month with a brand new stone that was loose from GOG. Coincidentally, it was the exact same mounting that you have. I think that they need to hear from their customers when something goes wrong.

Note that GOG also paid for my repair since it should not have been loose.

This is probably all a coincidance, but it really does make me question their bench jeweller.

Good luck.

I would also like to add that just as soon as I explained the problem to them, GOG dealt very honourably with the whole thing and their customer service was second to none.

Hi, Daniela..

I've sent an email to GOG asking if the stone was suppose to move around a little in the setting (cuz I really wasn't sure). I thought maybe that's the way it is ... as long as it's under the prongs. I guess from your reply and some of the previous posts, that it's not suppose to. If that's the case, I'm going to the jewler tomorrow to get it tightened. This scares me. What if this little stone just falls out! haha.. geez I hope not.

No it should not move at all....the prongs need to be tightened. I would send it back to GOG asap and get those tightened.

As for safety....just get in insured. Then it won't mater if it falls out.

I don't like 6 prongs so I wouldn't change my prongs just to not lose an insured stone (plus it's pretty rare if you check your prongs often as you are doing now).

Hi Leota,

Just forwarded you an email. We will of course take care of it. Mara, Rich, Cindy are all correct, it should not be loose. I let you know all your options in email and we'll take care of it speedily and efficiently.

Warm regards,
Jonathan

Thank you for your most generous offers... Just wanted to double check with you on how the stone is suppose to be. But I have a jewler here I'm very familiar with that'll probably either charge very little or might even do it for free. So.. now that I'm sure.. I can take it in.

So no problem .. just wanted to check you all you specialists here.

You might want to send it back to GOG to get it repaired. That way, if there is a problem, it should be easier to deal with resolving it. If your local jeweler damages your ring, you really don't have anyone to turn to. GOG will, I assume, retain responsibility for the workmanship since they would be repairing their own product that was improperly set.

I once had a ring arrive in the mail with the stone loose and rattling, as Leota describes. The seller told me that it had been tight when he sent it, but the temperature fluctuations during shipping made the metal expand and contract, loosening the stone. Is this plausible?
