Hello,

This is my first post, I need some input and your wisdom. I will be purchasing a 2 ct. E/VS1 Princess cut stone and a setting from a net vendor. Has anyone here ever utilized the services of Just Appraisers, 555 5th Avenue in New York ?. Should I take the setting and the GIA certified diamond to the appaiser mounted or not? Will that make a difference at the appraisal? It would make my life a bit more easier if I can take it mounted, I can just pay the dealer and take the ring and go and not worry about the diamond leaving my presense after the inspection. I know that sounds a bit paranoid...
This site is an awesome tool for a novice shopper like me making a big purchase for all the Forums this site offers.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

the short answer is; an appraiser can make a more accurate and complete appraisal if the diamond is not mounted.

Chris,

Do a search here for "Just Appraisers," and you''ll see a number of references to read through. I just did this, and reminded myself of this thread.

Your first & main question is...why are you going to the appraiser. If you''re going because it''s recommended here to do so...I''d recommend you did deeper. My guess is, you''d be fine, going with it mounted...but the answer will in large part depend on what''s motivating you to use an appraiser.

Thanks for your inputs, the vendor is very reputable and like you said, I''m sure everything will be allright. Deep down I just don''t want to be taken, it is such a BIG purchase.

My recommendation would be to take it in before it is set, so that IF something happens when its set you have some documentation that supports the "pre set" condition of the stone, and that the appraiser can be more accurate and complete in reporting the gemological quality to you.

Once it''s set, you may wish to have it looked at a second time to make sure it is a) set correctly b) that the item it is set in is made to a high quality standard c) so the completed item can be photographed and a valuation report written so you can get insurance coverage for it

Ask the appraiser if he willl charge you for the "second visit". Some may and some appraisers may not. The jewelry inspection I include with the initial cost. Just Appraisers may or may not include this. Discuss the entire assignment with them in advance, find out what they willl do, and what equipment they have as well.

APPRAISE THE APPRAISER.
