Hello

New to the site. I wish I knew about this site earlier since all the information is readily available in one area. I have learned a lot since I bought the diamond. I recently purchased a flanders cut diamond for my fiance. I bought it loose and would like to get it appraised prior to giving someone to set it. I am looking for an appraiser who will do it in front of me so that I can learn about the distinguishing features of the diamond. I have heard stories about people switching diamonds when setting them. It probably is not that frequent but one never knows. Any suggestions about appraisers in the San Jose area that I can take the diamond to.

Keep the good advice flowing.

For a qualified appraiser in your area...click on resources/independent appraisers/CA.

I''m sure one of our forum participants may be able to recommend someone in your area.

Most independent appraisers will examine your diamond while you watch and answer any questions that you may have.

I don''t know about IN San Jose, though if you want a quick ''diamond checkup'', Willow Glen Jewelers on Lincoln does a $75 internet verification kinda thing where they look at the cert and the stone and say YEP that''s the stone you bought kinda thing. It is a good idea for someone who does not need more detailed appraisal information and just wants some extra peace of mind. I have taken a few things there and I just love the store and browsing as well. They are very friendly and always clean my ring and I have had them resize it as well. They also sell Eightstar stones so it''s a fun place to see them in person.

But for a detailed appraisal, we go to Nancy Stacy in Walnut Creek. It''s a bit of a drive, 45 min from SJ but it''s worth it if you want to get mega information. You have to make an appt as she works out of her home and sometimes can book out a week or two weeks in advance. Her information is available on the pulldown up above under ''Resources'' and ''Appraisers''. She''s familiar with Pricescope as well.

You said you bought a Flanders diamond. I highly doubt that if you take it to a jeweler they are going to have another same size or looking ''Flanders'' diamond there in the store to switch it out with. So you are probably safe.

It''s definitely not like a common round brilliant kinda thing. BUT if it''s a reputable jeweler, they will not jeopardize their store and their own reputation to switch a stone out. And probably if it''s a reputable jeweler they sell stuff as nice as what you bought in general...so just stick with a reputable place (aka no ''We sell diamonds and fried chicken too'' kinda place!) and you should be fine. Good luck.

Thank you very much for the suggestions and advise. Will definitely speak with Nancy after I get the diamond next week. Now for finding someone to set it.
