A ring that i saw over the festive break got me started on my next project. The ring could not be resized so i had to build my own ring.

I have recently purchased a "light yellow" OEC, which has now been graded by IGL (AUS lab) as an 'O' color; polish = good, symmetry= fair; cut= fair. I know it isnt EGL USA for older cuts or GIA, but this is the best that i could get in AUS.

I have an idealscope image (attached) that shows that this diamond is bright from edge t edge, and it is. I currently do not have the diamond so i cant test it like what kenny is saying in a fancy light yellow thread; holding it with tweezer over a dark coloured paper etc...However, based on the IS, didnt think it woudl leak and when i did have the diamond, it didnt seem to "leak" to me, a novice.

I have read that cupping only helps with leaky diamonds, and can enhance the colour. However, i want to enhance/play with the colour of the diamond and thought of putting a yellow gold cup under the diamond.

I have a setting in mind (attached) was hoping to replicate it with a few modifications to personalise it.

So, questions:
1) is cupping going to make a difference in this setting? having read what Kenny wrote on another thread, makes me think that it is not going to help.
2) would having a yellow gold bezel then a white gold band make it work better with the colour- ie the reverse of the colours of the inspiration ring?
3) just go with the inspiration ring as is and modify as necessary

All comments appreciated.

HippiPixie-That's Havens ring. Very clever idea.
Greg-great setting! I think switching the metals on your inspriation ring would work to enhance the color. Can't wait to see this ring! Wish I could interest my DH in something like this. :))

Do you think you can post that link on here? I cant seem to locate it under the search function....found it. yes it does play with the colour, but i want more colour, if i can with the cupping and YG band/ bezel; without, getting another diamond hehehehe

Thanx woofmama.

IT is a lovely design.. there is just soo much detail without it being overpowering. WHen you study the ring, you go - oh wow- the milgrain and then the lovehearts... and then the yellow diamond... all surprising.

No, don't reverse the gold! The whole reason I like that ring is that the contrast between the while gold and the diamond makes the diamond appear more yellow. Ask your jeweler if they can do the yellow gold just under the diamond! Just my opinion! :))

Having a yellow cup will enhance the yellow colouration.

Dirty diamond = leaky = yellow of the cup reflects through the stone = yellower!!

Oh, wait, you wanted sparkle too?

Hi DS, that is my plan but after reading the light yellow thread where Kenny says that the yellow cup will do nothing unless it is a leaky diamond, I wasn't sure. I don't have an ASET, only idealscope. I guess getting second/ third/ fourth opinions are good. Hehehe.

So, YSsie, from what u are saying, the yellow gold cup can help to enhance the Colour if a leaky diamond but the sparkle may change with the cupping? I am not sure if I follow. Can you pls explain?
I don't have an ASET, and i only have an iphone photo of diamond, which is not the best. It is next to a 1ct radiant FLY.

ThAnx guys!

Ah, bad joke that didn't translate, sorry Greg ::)
Nope - a dirty diamond won't sparkle as much as a clean one so I'd stick with a more open cup myself, regardless of whether a closed cup would enhance the colour of this particular stone more.

ETA: Gorgeous stone btw - FK has a knack for finding the good ones!!

Re: Design help-To cup or not to cup.. calling Kenny and oth

Hi,
You have to think of it this way, a color enhancement cup will, at the minimum maintain the color of your stone and not wash it out. Most times it will enhance the color of the stone. The way the color enhancement cup is executed plays a big role in this as well. Also, I like to use 22K gold because it has a richer reddish hue than 18K and gives off a deeper color into the stone. You might suggest that to your jeweler.
I've seen fancy light yellow stones that seem like very strong fancy yellows after a nice color enhancement cup has been used.

Thank you Victor. Am privileged that u chimed in. I will definitely suggest to my local jeweller.

Yssie- I got the diamond from another PSer, actually, Madelise. I am not sure of where she got it originally, though, maybe FK??? Heheh
