DBTY vs Solitare

I am looking at buying a diamond necklace to wear with dressier outfits and for formal occasions. My budget isn't huge, but I was looking at either getting a DBTY with diamonds or a solitaire, OEC or OMC. I'd love it to match my other jewelry for fancy occasions.

For other dressy jewelry I already have a 5 stone OEC in rosé gold, .4 cwt AVC in white gold earrings, and a plain yellow gold bracelet.

The solitaire I was looking at was on JBEG, semi bezel, white gold.

Thoughts?

I tend to prefer solitaires, as they're less likely to flip ...

I think of DBTY as more casual. But very lovely!
I think pendant solitaires are more versatile with chain style and length....just a personal view.
Either will be great!

I have two dbty necklaces. One is 18" with 2" extender, and the other is 33.25" with 2.5" extender. Both are fancy looking for formal occasions. The shorter one has a dangling pendant and 7-pt dbty's, so it is suitable for fancier occasions. The long necklace, has 0.3ct-0.6ct dbty's, can be used for both formal and casual (wearing jeans) occasions. Both pieces are a must in my waldrobe. They are like studs and huggies if you want an analogy to earrings.

The only warning is that dbty necklaces are very expensive, because they are labor intensive.

Solitaire necklace, on the other hand, is much more afforable (unless you are talking about over one carat diamond), and much more under the radar. As an analogy to earrings, solitaire necklace is like stud earrings (no jackets, drops, or other extras). It is more like an everyday wear, but can be paired with other significant jewelry for a fancier look.

Strangely, I have most pieces of jewelry, but I do not have any solitaire necklace. Guess I do not have a need for it in my lifestyle and perference.

FD--you need to start a thread on your new DBTY necklace! :cheeky:

I just love FancyDiamond's post above!! :appl: What a perfect comparison of both styles - which do you think describes your lifestyle best, read.bradie?

I have a BGD Barbara solitaire pendant and I love it! it never comes off. I have a dbty bracelet and it also never comes off! Both are beautiful and both flip but if I was in the market and had to decide between 1 or the other - I'd go with a solitaire pendant but amp it up a bit more than the one I wear. Mine is an approx 1/2 ct OEC in the plain Barbara. I'd suggest a larger diamond (I'd select a J,K, L for a pendant) and go .70 - .90, SI, if you can afford it and then set in the milgrain Barbara. DREAMY!!!!

I chose dbty over solitaire when I had a choice and do not regret it! It is just a matter of personal preference I guess.
And I absolutely DIE to see your long DBTY, FancyDiamond! Please, please do a smtb thread!

Thank you all for, efriede, mom2boys, harpertoo, and Circe. I really appreciate the insight. Fancy diamond and enerchi, I would describe myself as a stud girl, basic simple but hopefully classy. I'm still young and beginning my career as a professional and want to look the part.

I think I'll go for the solitaire, around .7 for now. Always can acquire more, and i think I'd love a DBTY with a variety of shapes for something different.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help and insight you guys give!

Just wrote you a long reply and it was deleted!

Basically I recommended the solitaire for maximum impact and also a bezel to plump up the diamond. I also cautioned that the PS vendors can be very expensive when it comes to settings, and that a perfect solitaire bezel was made for me by a good local jeweller for $150, using a chain that I already had. I also said that I have found Blue Nile and James Allen to be the most competitve on price for loose diamonds. BN's inventory is virtual which means no photos but good prices. BN has a superb easy return policy. JA has photos but is not as hassle-free as BN in my experience. Here is the thread on my necklace for reference. It was a puzzle-piece consisting of an old chain, a online diamond from JA and a locally-made bezel, but it looks great and cost a fraction of what it would have cost for a similar finished piece from BGD or WF with same quality diamond.

Chain is 18k and bezel is 14k - I got that wrong in the link below, saying it was all 14k.

Is the Steven Kirsch piece yours, DS? It's GORGEOUS!

I have both currently. I have a .50ctw DBTY necklace that I pretty much wear religiously and then a 3/4ct solitare that I used to wear all the time. I'm not really sure why but I just stopped wearing the solitare. I'm actually in the process of taking it out of the basket setting and putting it into a ring to wear occasionally. Perhaps I will revisit the pendant later on down the road.
