hi everyone,

after speaking to the original appraiser (and person who the diamond was bought from), i''m confused as to how important it is to put cut information on the appraisal.

some background info. i got my ring 8 years ago but never had it insured. i recently reset it and want to insure it. i have the original GIA report (which does not contain any crown or pavillion angles) and a recent appraisal.

i contacted the original appraiser to see if i could get the crown and pavillion information if he has it. he asked why i needed that information and i said i wanted to put as much information on the appraisal for insurance purposes. he said that all i needed to have on the appraisal was the carat, clarity and color. when i told him that i wanted to make sure that i got a diamond that was as brilliant as the diamond i have now, he said that there is no worry that i would get a poorly cut diamond should the insurance company replace it. that all the information i needed was in the GIA report.

how can that be? isn''t it possible to match the measurements of the diamond along with color and clarity but get a diamond that didn''t "sparkle" as much? or would meeting all the criteria in the report ensure that i would get a good replacement?

here are the specs
7.2-7.35x4.56
depth 62.7
table 60
girdle think to thick faceted
culet very small
finish
polish good
symmetry good
VS1
I color

after gaining so much information from PS, i probably would have chosen a different stone, but it''s the stone i have now and it is very "sparkly."
an independentt appraiser i brought the diamond to said that though the diamond is not "ideal" that it has an excellent cut.

should i be concerned that i don''t have any cut information on my appraisal?

sorry this post is so long,
thank you in advance for any feedback

I'm very suprised that cut wouldn't be on an apprailsal. I could be wrong, but a full appraisal has as much information on it as possible. that one I had done didn't have angles, but had:

Approx measurments, weight, clour, clarity, and CUT example they said excellent. No angles or percentages, but that is on the GIA cert. If cut is NOT there, why would an insurance company pay more for an excellent cut, when they could get the same diamond specs with a good cut for cheaper. It's your word against theirs... So use the 2 certs in conjunction, ie GIA AND the independent appraisal. Never get an appraisal done on a stone from where you bought it. Find someone that has nothing to gain from the situation.

Good luck!

If the diamond is in the setting, I don''t think most appraisers have the tools to measure the angles ... if any. It seems like appraisal are all over the map. I guess some people want them very high if they''re dealing with their homeowner''s insurance as they can make a high claim if stolen. If someone wants to take out a policy on the diamond itself, they may want a more accurate one so their rates are in line.

If you search jamesallen.com, whiteflash.com, etc ... I think you will get a good idea as to the "discount" end of the market ... if that helps. I would compare those prices to any appraisal to see minimum replacement value.

since the stone in question is in the commercial class its less important than it is with super-ideals.
With the info on the cert it would be fairly easy too replace that stone with like quality.

Including real cut informaion on apraisal reports is a rather recent phenomenon. Many appraisers still are not well equipped to provide even basic details, let alone major details that many now think are crucial. An ordinary cut does nto benefit from cut detail as much as an especially well cut diamond, but if you want the details, there is no harm in having them. I doubt anyone was at fault some years ago for not giving you what passes now as acceptable.

thank you everyone for your feedback. hopefully, i never need to find out how important cut information is for my particular diamond.
