After drooling over everybody’s jewelry for the last month I finally mustered up the courage to post my engagement ring.
My mom created her custom 14K yellow gold wedding band and selected the diamond (she said it took over six months for the whole process
) in 1984. I remember my dad constantly joking that she had a Ford Fiesta on her finger
My parents have since divorced so she no longer wears the ring. As a surprise for my 18th birthday she had my name and birthdate engraved on the inside. She said when she passed away the ring was mine. How sweet! But I thought, "Geeze that diamond is going to get lonely in the safe for another 45+ years!
Fast forward to the summer of 2011 - My now fiancé and I started looking for rings. I found my DREAM ring at jewelry store back in Wisconsin (we now live in Iowa) that my mom and I frequent. It was a custom made ring, totally unique and me. Now the next catch was convincing my then boyfriend that this custom ring was indeed the one. It didn't take long to realize that we'd never top that ring.
Fall of 2012 - It had now been a year since we had selected a ring. We had since then purchased a little farm and both started new careers. I knew that buying a 1ct diamond would be challenge on our budget but I tried to remain patient. My mom had hinted to me that she'd be honored if we'd use her diamond in my ring. I said it was up to Travis and I felt kind of bad dismantling her band. She said she was sure our jeweler could do it without harming the band. I said if she wanted to look into it, sure! But it would all depend on what Travis wanted to do.
On a beautiful fall day in October my fiancé and I took a walk at the park by the lake. This was the first place we talked about getting married the following summer. As the sun was setting and I was looking at the water, I look back to see him on one knee holding a my dream ring with a HUGE diamond in it! After squeaking out YES I couldn't take my eyes off the gorgeous piece. As it turns out, he did end up using my mom’s diamond. I think this makes the ring THAT much more special! I am beyond happy with the final product and LOVE having a palladium band! It's a solid comfort fit with a square bottom! All of these pictures are from my phone so pardon the quality.
