Hi,

I''ve ordered in a 1.26 ct cushion cut stone to look at and potentially purchase. The specs are in the GIA report attached.

I had previously made this post about another stone I was considering and went off of (here). This again is another facet plot I have not seen before having checked:

cushion facet thread 1
cushion facet thread 2

The most similar stone I''ve found is this GOG stone GOG stone.

Basically I was wondering if anyone had opinions on the stone? Bit too deep? Table bit big? Inclusions eye visible?

The stone is costing ~£3.3k (before tax)

My partner has also specified somewhat she would like a small stone on each side. Now my budget only caters really for a .25 stone on each side. Is this big enough? Will it look right? She is hoping for cushion cut side stones (not that u can probably tell at that size) and has falled in love with rings like this.

Any help, advice and opinions will be appreciated. I''ll see the ring on Wednesday, again sorry no photos, if I buy it I''ll take em lol. Might not be much to say but I thought is worth a check cos it''s a big purchase.

However I have asked for this one instead...not chunky cut, pretty standard modified brilliant. If anyone has any opinions are appreciated. Better proportions I think, got fluorescence tho...and twinning wisps that he says are eye clean?

Thanks

That top plot is a new one to me - I''ve not seen one like that before. I''ve always thought of the cushion cut as being the birthplace of new cuts... it has more variety than any other shape I know of. that said, I really have no idea if either of those would be a nice stone.

oh I remember what I was going to say - I don''t think little tiny cushions are all that great. Maybe if they were H&A - but in stones that size you don''t really have the real estate in the stone to show off the cut - it might even look round. I''d put it all in one stone (go bigger!) and tell her you''ll upgrade her ring for an anniversary lol

1) Your partner is looking for a trinity ring 3 stone and this is very possible. I don't know what your budget is for the side stones but 0.25 cushions is possible and will look nice with the main stone in the range you are looking for. I would definitely suggest about this size for a 6X6 centre. Try to match the LW ratio of the centre to the sidestones. I like small side stones compared to the centre if the sides are too big(like half the size of the centre) the ring can look big and bulky.

2) I have seen cushion #2 before(all had poor optics) for cushion #1 the top plot before it is the same plot for the Square Brilliant cut. I think this cut is more popular in Europe as the last one I saw was cut in Belgium. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with the stone I saw either, yours could be different but it did have the "crushed ice" appearance like most of the cushion modified brilliants do.

3) I would suggest that you look for a cushion brilliant. (no modified)

If you want a modern cushion brilliant one in your specs range. I'd suggest this one http://www.bluenile.co.uk/cushion-cut-diamond-1-carat-very-good-cut-g-colour-vs2-clarity_LD01524851?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0#grading_report. My fiance has a larger one cut by the same cutting facility, they are all cut to the same proportions and all have very similar look, perfectly square shape and pavillion facets similar to a round.

Also considering you want a trinity if you want the stones to match I would go with this one and two round brilliants to match. If you put prongs on the corners of this stone it will match very well to two round brilliant side stones and these will be much easier to match up and to find in the smaller size.

4) But if you like chunky faceted cushions and a more antique looking stone I would suggest something like this or http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6257/ or http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6037/

Anyway you might indeed like the stone #1 you called in I was in an appraisor's office and the customer kept the stone anyway, but once you have seen it compared to the modern cushion brilliant or a GOG chunky faceted cushion you may want to reconsider I know we did.

Just to give you a comparison here are a few videos worth watching:

http://www.vimeo.com/3164922 (comments on most cushion modified brilliant diamonds, they do have one rare nice one in this video but it still doesn't hold a candle IMO to well cut cushion brilliants)

http://www.vimeo.com/3164922 (comparing a modern cushion similar to what I suggest in #3 to the GOG chunky cushions I mention in #4)

There are tons of videos on vimeo which rhino takes in very controlled lighting conditions so these should help you a lot decide which type of cushion you like.

Anyway I wrote this post mainly to point out how good it can get in the world of cushions, but most people choose a cushion outside of our little pricescope world and are perfectly happy with their stones, we are the most obesessively picky diamond shoppers on the planet.

Good-luck with your search,

CCL

Instead of getting 0.25 carat cushions have you considered putting on small RBs with 4 prongs? An RB in a 4 prong setting looks pretty square-ish so it will mimic the rounded corner rectangular shape of the cushion pretty nicely, IMHO.

CCL - thanks for your advice, the blue nile stone you had suggested did look very nice, I never saw a none ''modified'' cushion in person in the end at all. As I''d already committed to viewing a stone with 77diamonds I couldn''t really switch to blue nile, and I was hesitant to order from a company without a UK office for me to view the stone and decide on it. (Also a little time pressured)

Cehrabehra & C-Tek - I also worried a little about the small cushions. I suggested the RB idea but she seemed to really want cushion sidestones.

In the end I liked the stone. There was no inclusions you could see with the eye. I got 30 point side cushion stones, VS1 and VVS1 E & F. The total cost for two rings came in at a bit over £5k with tax incl. The ring was bespoke.

I realise most people on this forum are US shoppers. Just wanted to say credit where credit is due. I was very happy with the 77diamonds service. They scoured the manufacturers for the quite specific stones I was looking for and gave me the option to come and see it before I had to buy it, letting me look at a different stone if I didn''t like it. I was quite an anal and persistent customer and went into their office a few times before I was willing to commit but I found them patient and not pressuring. Their sales advisor was very clued up as to the multitude of differences in cushions.

Here are some pics (sorry for the man hand - and my yellow lighting and camera skills are quite poor), thanks for the help, positive and negative comments are welcome (my partner won''t see this anyway).
