Cushion Cut vs. Radiant Cut

Hi,

I am contemplating between a cushion cut and radiant cut stone. I am hoping for some feedback. My budget is limited so the most of the budget will be going into the stone so the stone will probably be set in a solitaire (leaning toward 2 mm knife edge) setting... Does anyone have a cushion cut or radiant cut stone in a solitaire setting? I'd love it if anyone could share photos if they do. I am looking for a diamond in the .90-1.05 carat range. The first, the cushion cut, looks really interesting! I'd ask for an ASET of that one for sure. The second looks like it might be okay, and the third I'd pass on. I think that for your third ASET request, there's a better one out there.

Does anyone have a cushion cut or radiant cut stone in a solitaire setting?

Mine is a .55 square radiant in a solitaire setting from Whiteflash. You can see photos of it in this post:

I will say that a square radiant looks a lot like a princess in a solitaire, since the corners get covered with prongs. I feel that I am less likely to chip this stone vs. a princess. If I could, though, I'd get a 1 carat antique cushion or European cut round and set it in a square bezel or illusion setting to make it look squarer.

I'd pass on the third as well. First one is really different. Second one is a 4 main, which aren't as a rule great performers but there are exceptions.

Pickings are very slim on 90 point stones around 2000 with potential for great light return.

I kind of like cushions that look like cushions. I don't know about these cut corner varieties. That's just my opinion! Sounds like your budget is around $3000 for the stone. It may be difficult to get you a carat for $3000. Here are some other options for you to consider:

Anyone looking for a cushion cut stone I would strongly suggest using ERD or GOG as they specialize in cushion cut diamonds. On a limited budget you cannot afford to roll the dice on finding a great performing stone. You should also watch some of GOG's videos so you can get an idea of which faceting pattern you prefer in a cushion cut.

This one on ERD faces up the largest....Almost 6x 6.5mm I might have them pull this stone since it faces up so large and is over carat in your budget. G color with strong blue fl. could be really lovely.

Just because it's on GOG doesn't mean it's a nice cushion. This one is not at all. ASET is not good and it's a 4 main with a sub par performance. Please stop recommending it.

the number of pavillion mains (main facets cut into the bottom of the diamond). With cushions/radiants there are a LOT of different faceting plots. Some are better than others for light return. As a general rule straight four main ones (instead of 8 or 6 main, or modified four main, modified 6 main, etc.) are not the greatest for light return. But there are the occasional exception to that rule.
