There’s such a thread in the diamond forum, so why not start a colored stones version?
Often, interesting or unusual stones come up that don’t have a dedicated place to be shared, yet would make interesting or amusing discussion.
If you find something uncommon, cool, offbeat, or just worth a look - whether for good or bad reasons - post it here :)
Can be unique due to cut, material, treatment, inclusion, etc... Anything, no rules!

Hoping @tyty333 is OK with me importing her idea to the CS forum (if not, happy to remove)

I'll start:
Brazilian Alexandrite - but a sugarloaf cut and cats eye in one.

This is fun! I bought these butterfly wing cabs awhile back. You see them everywhere, usually in tourmaline. But these are natural sapphire with odd coloration and chatoyancy. I thought they were unique!

Thanks for participating, Autumn!
Butterfly cut in sapphire with unique color AND chatoyancy - beautiful and unique.
Any setting plans? Earrings or too big for you? I have a different shape gem but with similar general mm size. I love them, glad I own them, but no idea what to do with them.

Reminds me of this 1+CT natural untreated butterfly cut intense pink diamond :oops2:
Already posted on the diamond thread but I think it fits here too!

Welp, I have a new item to lust over. :eek2:

Oh I forgot to answer your question! I might make a pendant with them eventually!!

From Lotus IG. TLDR – emerald and alexandrite in 1 stone.

So is it now 'emerald by day, emerald and ruby by night'? :lol-2:

Full post:
"You may be aware that many emerald deposits also produce alexandrite. But did you know that they could occur together, in the same faceted stone?

It is exceptionally rare, but one such example recently made its way to our laboratory where we had the chance to perform an in-depth analysis.

Using fluorescence microscopy and micro Raman spectroscopy, we discovered the stone is composed of about 75% translucent alexandrite (in two sections) with a transparent emerald zone nestled in between.

Anyone heard of chambersite?

Moh's 7 which is high for such obscure material.
But it is rarely facet quality, and always tiny if clean (around 2-3mm it appears). Beautiful triangle crystal roughs.
Bigger cut ones exist but they are heavily included.
A kind of pretty grayish purple/purple taaffeite color.
I think I might ask a couple dealers at Tucson to look for something like this. I'm a fan of this kind of stuff.

There are almost no images of this material online that is faceted/clean, but here's what I found.

Looks like you missed it by just a couple days because it was available when I posted it - maybe they removed the listing and will list it back?

From my history this is the link to it when it was up:

Odd that they removed it instead of having it showed up as sold like the rest of their sold stuff.
They sell intl via Buyee- maybe theres some English customer service?

Regardless, indeed its a one of a kind stone.

I love how this thread is turning into just me posting things outside people wouldn't understand :lol-2: but of course everyone is welcome to post.

We know of purple/lavender/pink taaffeite, and even rare orange or red taaffeite. I recently discovered that there is BLUE taaffeite.

I also came across this piece which is less violet and more blue - even a little greenish?
Dunno whats up with the poor quality. from @raregemstonescn
Hopefully it will indeed end up in G&G so I can read about this material

I'm so enjoying this, but I don't have much to add because my collection is so common!

Oh these aren't mine, I wish, just random stuff I find.
I have no problem being the main one sharing, it's fun, and glad others might find something interesting! :)

No, I know! I guess not only are my own gems common, but so are the ones in my "dream jewels" folder. lol I've always kept this photo of a fine bixbite ring though. TDF!

Ah I see what you mean! 'Boring' stones can also be worthy, like a super unusual cut, colors or inclusion.

Yes that's a legendary red beryl ring.

Speaking of red beryl check this out.... an eye clean and untreated 1.5+ct GIA certed red beryl. 63k. I want to see if it has the 'garnet effect' (looks like garnet) or has that bright red beryl color/glow. Volunteers?

It is also on eBay for less - 45k - likely the actual owner.
Little secret: I've been watching this stone for a couple years, and it used to be listed on eBay for only 30k. And eBay takes a good 15% cut or so. Soooo go on, someone make an offer :lol-2: 25k or so outside of eBay might be enough.;)2

Even if it ends up not the most beautiful thing you could buy with that money (ie, victim of garnet effect or extinction) it is pretty much irreplaceable.

Oh, I think also Tino Hammid photographed this stone - at least it looks identical, but I can't confirm.

:kiss2: I don't even care if I could find a similarly colored garnet for comparative pennies; that is the finest loose red beryl I've seen for sale in that size range. In fact, I've never seen one at 1.5+ct that I would consider gem quality (excluding the Caratell ring, of course). The tone is a little darker than ideal, but she's distinctly red, saturated, super clean, and with an interesting cut! I wish they didn't obscure the depth on the GIA report... I'm curious.

Oh I agree if I had the funds this would be near my #1 on my list, I would at least schedule a viewing with serious interest.

Ah, thank you! So, as suspected, she's quite deep. But I'm sure that's a function of the custom cut. Just wow... thank you for sharing this.

That gem (of that quality) is at the top of my list, should I ever win the Lotto.
