Hello!

I am new to this. Am currently looking for my engagement ring, which I would like to be an OEC ideally. Am based in London, England, but travel to LA and San Fran for work from time to time.

I found a lovely sparkly 2.35 carat OEC in London which looks white and sparkles beautifully. The only think is when I looked at it from the side in the setting, the point doesn't seem to sit right and seems to fall off centre if that makes any sense? Also, I can see the girdle when I look closely and it doesn't seem to be that polished. Other than that it sparkles and looks white and has no other visible inclusions ( I have great eyesight!)

Could anyone advise me if the lopsided base is normal in OECs and if I should leave it and look for another diamond please?

Would really appreciate your help.

Also, am I right that it's best to see an OEC in the flesh rather than buying online since they vary so much?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I don't think that is unusual at all. Old stones are not going to be precision cut so a culet that is cut crooked isn't a surprise. But whether things like that bother you is up to you! My opinion is that you have to see the stones, so you are better off trying to find one locally rather than sending diamonds back and forth to another country. That could get expensive, too!

Thank you! I wasn't sure if that was normal or not and if a crooked cullet affected the sparkle and beauty of the diamond.

Will stick to local then. I was thinking of looking at Jewels by Erica Grace or Single Stone when am in the US. Though SS did quote pretty high prices for the grading of the stones in their rings. It appears to be cheaper in the UK and JBEG.

Thanks again!
