I'm trying to get an idea of what a 9.6mm center with 2 x 5.6mm sides looks like. People here are wizards at generating images reflecting different sizes, so I wondered if anyone here could help me with this? Thank you in advance, and cookies for whoever is able to help me out! :mrgreen:

@tyty333 -

Am I right in thinking you've done this in the past? If you can help me out, I'd be very grateful!

I can give it the old college try what’s your finger size

50885EDD-9B86-4308-A6F2-15860DAC0440.jpeg This does NOT account for angles. Technically it’s less in terms of mm than my 5 stone was at 20.8mm, (what was mine 22 mm across?) but considering you won’t be able to angle them as much as you could 5 small stones, one wonders if you have the finger real estate for this.

@Niel - you are the BOMB, baby! Thank you so much!

Yes, my finger is a 7.5 but I often have rings made in a size 8, as, having Crohn's, my fingers sometimes swell, and the less pressure at that point, the better. My 7 stone is 29.7mm, but the end stones are 17 points each, and actually sit very low, between my fingers, more than on top. Since I don't go through life with my fingers squished together, you still generally see the outer stones, but they aren't technically on top of my finger. The center 5 stones are, however, and they equal 22.9mm. So I'm thinking this will be fine.

I hear what you're saying about not being able to get as much curve from a three stone, but I think, at 20.9mm, I'll have plenty of room. I used to have a 3 stone that was 19.7mm, and I found it annoyingly small and somewhat (to my eye) disproportionate to my finger. So an extra 1.2mm will work for me nicely.

I was thinking about larger side stones, but having now had a glimpse of @SimoneDi's gorgeous new ring, and having fallen in love with it comprehensively, and since I already have side stones I can use, this will work well for me, I think.

@diamondseeker2006 - as you can see, I have totally come over to the dark side! And thank you for the photo of m-2-b's gorgeous 3 stone; I'm thinking of something with an antique feel, so I KNOW you're the right person to talk to!!

@Niel - where should I send the cookies? :)

I agree that your stone would be very pretty with accent sides! m-2-b's has about the proportions you are considering because hers are about 9.3mm and sides are about 5.2mm. I am still thinking on that idea, as well. So I am interested in what you decide! I am glad you are planning on keeping this ACA!!!

Yes, this one will stay with me. DH *specifically* wants me to have a 3-stone - they're his favorite setting - so at some point I'll make the leap. I'm going to keep the VC H&A, too, and it will be in the simplest of simple solitaire settings. I've been working on it with DKJ, and I've stripped the design back to the simplest design I can manage. I really want something I can wear with jeans etc - something elegant, not distracting, but something that showcases my beautiful 2.54ct VC diamond. It's a G, so it's nice and white, and I'm thinking a very high polish platinum setting will be all I want. I think I'm going to enjoy wearing it very much.

But the larger stone will ultimately go into the three stone setting, tho not in the short term. I already have the sides, but they're currently in something else, so for the sake of future projects, I just wanted to make sure that I want to use them in this way. I think I'm sold. :)

Mrs-b, I am lost once again! So the 3.4 ACA is set in the Holly setting, the 2.something is in the Victor Canera three stone with pear sides, and you have purchased a 2.54 diamond as well? Am I missing a stone in here somewhere or do I have that right? I feel like I have been following this story but all of a sudden, I feel like I missed an episode! LOL!

@MissGotRocks - I'm so sorry I'm giving you a headache!! :mrgreen: I think you saw all the bits, but I think you might have forgotten the chapter where I upgraded the VC H&A stone from a 2.2ct to a 2.54 ct stone. It went from 8.3mm up to 8.8mm, and it seems to have a lot more presence now; it's like it's crossed a threshold of some kind. I pulled apart the three-stone-with-pears as the new stone didn't fit it (I asked Victor, but he said it couldn't be done); it was a beautiful ring, but I felt that the design was too small for my hand, so didn't try to replicate it. I think I like a higher set soli, so that's where I'm going.

The 3.4 is in the Merry setting. (Holly is the wedder) And it will stay there for the foreseeable future. One day, tho, I'd like to put an opal into Merry (which I think would look AWESOME!), and put the 3.4ct stone into a 3 stone. I love Merry, tho, and am very happy with her for now. Switching her up is a way down the track, and the side stones I have for her are currently in a setting I like very much also. So it's not like they're hanging about waiting to be set, either.

So that's where we are! I hope that helps.

PS For what it's worth, the 2.54 stone will be staying in the soli setting for the rest of eternity, and none of my other rings have been changed for years. It just takes me a little bit to get it right. But then they stay as they are.

I did miss that upgrade somewhere along the line - tell me the color and clarity of your new stone! I've got the big picture now! Thanks for keeping me straight and up to date - I knew I must have missed an episode somewhere along the line - ha!

This makes me chuckle. :)

The new stone is 2.54ct, G SI1, 8.8mm. It's a beautiful stone - one of Victor's signature H&A cut stones.

Wow - bet it is beautiful! Congrats on the upgrade. I am so sorry that the three stone with pears setting didn't work for your new stone but sounds like you've got a new plan for this stone. Hope to see it set - guess you didn't do a SMTB thread for it - that's the only way I figure I missed it.

No matter - it sounds gorgeous and I am, as always, happy for you!! :appl:

Thanks, @MissGotRocks - I'm very happy with where I've landed on it. The three stone with pear sides was a gorgeous ring - I just don't feel that it did the business on my particular hand, so I'm not grieving its passing too much. The diamond I now have will make a lovely, every-day solitaire; large enough for my hand, not so large as to be too glam. There's nothing like a size 7.5 finger to cut a 2.5ct stone down to size!! And of course I still have the 3.4ct stone in the super blingy setting for when I want a bigger look.

I get the new solitaire Saturday after next when I'm back in LA. I'll definitely post some photos then. :)

What are you going to do with the VC 3 stone setting??
