Hi,

I am looking for some advice on putting together an engagement ring. I've settled on a style / design from Birks:

http://www.maisonbirks.com/en/birks-amorique-pave-canadian-diamond-engagement-ring-2834

My options are to:
- buy from Birks at their inflated prices
- buy a diamond online and get someone I know to put the setting together for me.

I'm just curious about a couple things:
- Birks says that their amorique diamond is unique and patented cut. Will it look significantly different if I put a different cushion cut diamond into it?
- It was suggested to me that 19kt gold is a better choice over platinum due to easier polishing and easier repairs. Any opinions on this?
- What do you think of this diamond for this ring?:

We tried a diamond in store in the 0.5 and 0.7 sizes and thought the 0.7 was better.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like their patented cut is more of an old cut style (like an AVC), so yes this diamond will look different if you put it in. What is your budget? This is a fairly easy setting to recreate, I'm sure BG could create it for you for much cheaper than birks.

I'd like to spend under $10000 for the ring and diamond.

Would a hearts and arrow look good in this kind of setting? In store, the diamond they had set looked like it had very small almost fuzzy brilliance , almost like static on a television screen. The BG diamond seems like it would have more defined brilliance?

Do you have any recommendations for a diamond that would match more closely to the burks diamond?

Yes - Good old gold will have a few. I'm not sure how much you'd need for the setting to keep it under $10k, so here are a few at different price points, colours and clarities. You could certainly go higher than 0.7 if you arent getting the Birks markup.

You might also want to look at Brilliantly Engaged https://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/
On their front page is the picture below, and it looks very similar (though if you want it to look more like the birks youd want brightcut pave and a more squareish shape), and I'm sure they could do that nicely.
