Hi Everyone,
I absolutely love the OEC rings that I have seen here, and started casually looking for one to purchase for myself.
I found a few on Etsy and Ebay that I am watching, but don't really know what to look for when choosing a OEC.
Just out of curiosity, I called a long established local diamond dealer and asked him if he had any Old European Cuts. He said they usually send them out to be re-cut (!) because they aren't as desirable and in demand as the round brilliants, but he thought he might have something in old stock and would get back with me. He mentioned that he considers those type of cuts to have a small table and I mentioned the chunky facets and that I like the big pastel colors that I see them throw in pictures. So, he called me back and said he found a great example of the cut I am looking for that had been pulled from a estate ring. It does not have papers, is about 1.03 carats, I color (maybe higher), SI clarity, eye clean and would be about $2,250. He did mention that if he sent it out to be re-cut, that same diamond would run about $4,000-$5,000. Just for background, I live in conservative mid-west, and I don't think there is much demand for OEC's. He seemed quite surprised that I was looking for one.
So, first I am wondering if this price sounds about right?
Also, I would like it to have papers and I don't know how to go about that. At this price, would I purchase it and trust the specs given, then send it to GIA or EGL, or should I ask for papers before the purchase. I have read about people asking for papers first here on the forum, but that was for much more expensive diamonds.
The next step would be for me to see it in person, but I'm not sure what to look for in a OEC. Any tips regarding what's desirable or undesireable? I feel like I may be in over my head on this one as far as knowledge goes.
Thanks in advance!
