Hello All and Happy New Year!

I am excited to report an update about a setting for my color change (color shift, really) garnet.

For this stone, I knew I wanted to do something very different than all of my other pieces, and very different in general - but I didn't know what that looked like.

I found a jewelry designer near where I live (did an online search). Fell in love with her designs and decided to take the drive to talk with her.

So...................................... Happy New Year to me - I wnet today.

I don't know exactly what the final design will look like because I didn't want to force the creative energy of the designer. But we did talk at length and I believe we "get" eachother. The designer also explained to me that the final design evolves organically as the process continues. (She has also assured me that if I am not happy, we will work together until I am happy.)

My ring will be made of palladium with 18K rose and yellow vines / leaves / beads. It will also be accented with three 10 point round brilliant diamonds asymetrically set.

I have attached some photos to give you an idea of what the final will look like.

What do you think??

It's an interesting design aesthetic, a little unusual, but that might work well with your unusual garnet. It looks as though some of the metalwork is done is metal clay? I hope you'll keep updating the forum as the design process goes along!

ok, we all...i think...know i like the unusual so i absolutely LOVE your designs!

creative, organic, textured......everything i think jewelry should be. and definitely not boring or something you'll see on other people.

i am particularly fond of the last picture.....

while your stone is not round, i think you've found a designer that will do your color change garnet justice.

Thanks for replies Aoife and Movie Zombie. For sure the designs are unique.

I included the three ring examples specifically because each has elements of what my final design will be. Mine will be fashioned of the three metal colors.

Should be about 4 weeks.

Thanks for looking!

I really like those settings a lot. I love bezels because they are so clean and I think the other elements in those rings are really cool!

I really like that designer, the work is unique, but I am apprehensive setting an already dark stone in a bezel. Are you sure about that? It will get darker in the setting.

I was thinking the same - gemgaga, you might want to check your garnet in all lights first, because it sure looks on the dark side in the photo.

I’m so excited for you that you have found a designer who will work with you and create something totally unique to match your unusual garnet. I think you are off to a good start but there are three things in question that should be given further consideration:
1. Palladium seem to show the patina quite easily and becomes a dark gray metal.
2. Your garnet is dark and I worry that a bezel will darken it further, leaving a black hole on the finger.
3. An enclosed setting like a bezel minimizes the colour shift, if your intention is to play up the shift.

Excellent call on the bezel possibly darkening the appearance. I hadn't considered that - particularily in light of the color change.

I have contacted the designer to discuss the possibility of a semi-bezel.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep you posted.
