Hi clever ones

I''ve been keeping my eyes open for a few months now and have already returned one pair of studs due to them not having that special sparkle. I would really value any comments or help you wish to pass on. I''ve been assured the following studs really really sparkle so here are the vitals (I was hoping to find a pair of studs just over the 1ct mark but one thing I have learnt from this wonderful place is that it''s better to look for quality rather than size - now I need your help to tell me if this is quality?? - I''m on the disability pension so I''m a bit limited $$$ and at the same time want a lovely pair of studs to give myself a bit of a boost):

princess cut diamond studs .85ctw
size: 4mm x 4mm
depth: 73.5%
table: 70%
girdle: medium to thick
culet: none
polish: excellent
symmetry: excellent
cut: ideal
clarity: VS1
colour: E
fluorescence: none

Also, regarding cut a D rating was mentioned whatever that means - could someone tell me please?

Many many thanks for any help at all.
Megan

Are you really stuck on princess cuts? The only thing is for .85tcw 4mm is a bit small. According to the mm to carat weight chart in the FAQ section page 2 .38 measures 4x4. But the table and depth are good according to Dave Atlas''s chart though you do not have the crown height.

Hi, Megan:

Fancy cut stones (pears, ovals, princess, etc.) are tricky and can''t really be judged by the numbers; they really need to be seen to be properly evaluated. I''d recommend finding an independent appraiser in your area who can help you. An independent appraiser isn''t a jeweler; it''s someone who doesn''t sell stones at all.

Regarding your "D" cut comment, are you perhaps meaning D color? D is the top grade on the color chart, but the venerable grading labs such as AGS and GIA don''t have a "D" cut rating that I''m aware of.

This sounds like a significant purchase for you, so it really would be a good idea to have an independent appraiser evaluate stones you are considering prior to purchase. Alternately, if your vendor has a generous return policy (meaning not exchange but return), you could have them appraised post-purchase and return them if they don''t pass muster.

Best of luck to you in your search for a beautiful pair of earrings!

Thanks for pointing something out that I would have regretted LisaC. I haven''t been able to look at any princess cuts so I would have been disappointed. It may be better for me to think about a round shape although I was told that some princess cuts are much the same size as rounds. I was even surprised to hear that princess cuts have more facets and can be much brighter. I wonder if other people spend months looking like myself???

Hi Alj

I think I was becoming tired & confused with looking at so many beautiful diamonds! I would really like to know what an average sized pair of princess cut diamonds would be in terms of carats - would about .60ct per ear be an okay size?? A friend who sells diamonds suggested I have a pair of round hearts & arrows .75ct. He claimed they would "pop" with being so bright but I wasn''t really fussed on the round cut at the time. Also the size wasn''t big enough. I''m from Australia and one thing I''ve really noticed is how big all your diamonds are that either your wonderful men buy you or you treat yourself. I''ve been really enjoying looking at all the photos and I even came across - was it your ring Alj?? It was really something anyway.

Thanks for your valued help.

Thanks heaps for suggesting this thread LisaC. It was a big help and made me realise that the .85ct princess cut diamond studs may not look so tiny afterall. That''s what I was concerned about as my main priority of them being brilliant & sparkly and a great cut has been met.
