Celebrating a milestone. Rolex or upgrade e-ring?

Sorry, keep in mind that I don't know anything about watches except for what I've learned the last few days. But I have to ask what the difference is between maintenance, service, and cleaning/polishing. And when would I need to do either of these?

Also, the medium Tank Fr. has a date on it. If I get the solo, I will lose out on that feature. Although I do have an iphone I can look at quite easily.

On Jomashop it shows 2 years warranty. What about beyond that?

What are the chances that retail stores that carry the watch are willing to price match online stores? Should I try or is that tacky?

Even if you bought from an AD after 2 yrs any repair $$$ comes out of your pocket.

Depending on the watch... you can haggle b/t 25%-30% off of MSRP from an AD,and if you buy out of state you can save more $$$ on the sales tax... ;))

I just feel like they aren't going to take that much off a $10-12k watch. But if anyone knows AD's who take off 25% or more, there are probably a lot of people who would like to know!!!
DS, If you can get hold of Skippy or kaleigh ask them for my Email address and I'll let you know the AD's name... ;))

For most mechanical watches they preach the 5 yr overhaul rule, but IMO if the watch still keeping ex time then i'll wait at least 10 yrs before thinking about an overhaul.

So now that I've chosen a watch (or narrowed it down), I need to decide where to buy it from. The store I went to, Jade Galore, said they don't offer discounts on Cartier watches. He said there was a recent price increase also. The small Solo is $2,475 on Jomashop but $2,700 at the store. There's an 8.75% tax rate at the store, which brings me to $2,936.25. But consider this. I've been wanting to get my ering/band rodium plated and polished, which they do there, but at $130/piece. He said he would do both rings for me for free. Also, If I purchase the watch from them, he will give me the next battery for free, and free lifetime polishings/cleanings. It's inside a mall so I can drop it off, shop, and pick it up in an hour or so.
That is bunch of BULL!. Chinese retailer don't haggle? take your business else where!. What is the reference # of the watch that you were looking at?

I think you can find rhodium plating for less than $130 per ring. That is nuts and I would not let it enter into the watch decision. I have honestly never had a watch polished, but if you wear it daily for 10 years, perhaps you might want to do so. I'd send it to someone who deals in high end watches for that. You rarely ever would have a problem with a quartz watch. I think the Tank F is worth the $3750 compared to the Solo, but I would not pay full price for it. But if you set price aside totally, which one looked and felt nicer to you?

Thanks DF! I will ask Skippy!

Just looked at the pictures again, and while they are both stunning, the mid sized Francaise really is perfection. And DS makes an excellent point about it being a great discount and within budget.

The small Tank Solo looks beautiful on you!!

Do you know an AD that I can purchase the medium Tank Fr. for cheaper?! Don't hold out on me DF!

Jade Galore wanted the full price of $4,700 for it, which is the MSRP on the Cartier website. I admit I'm letting other things cloud my judgement. The fact that they said I could leave my watch for an hour while I'm shopping at the mall and they will polish it sounded sweet at the time. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I would need to do that often.. and it's definitely not worth $1K (which is what I would save if I purchased from Jomashop).

The reference number of the watch I want is: W51011Q3, which is the medium Tank Fr.

Lovelyhearts, what do you think about this pre-owned rolex? It is blingy though vintage and an auction so not sure what price it will end up at but this is a good ebay seller from my experience.

Hi Missy,

I really love the bling on the rolex.. but I think I'm finally over the disappointment I faced of not being able to afford a rolex that I really like. :blackeye: Sad but true.

Thanks for this comment DS. I really appreciate it because the "extras" were starting to cloud my judgement. I want to get my rings cleaned and looking white again! But that's a different story.. I just have to make time to bring them in.

Setting price aside, I like the medium tank fr. a tad more than the solo. The $3,750 is if I purchase it on Jomashop.. the price at Jade Galore is $4,700 + 8.75% tax. It's in my price range but just knowing I can get the watch on Jomashop for so much less is killlllinnnngg me! But I am going to hold out until I can find an AD to buy the watch from for less.

Maybe DF (ahem!) will hook me up if he knows someone that I can purchase from... :(sad

Aww I think the the mid sized Francaise will look smashing on your wrist! You really cannot go wrong. And, there will always be other bling purchases so it's not like you have written off getting a Rolex ever if you should so choose sometime in the future. I really think you are going to love the watch you end up purchasing. So many great options!

We don't have PM on PS,but $3750 out the door is a fair price. That is 20% off MSRP.

As a Rolex owner, I'd go for the ring upgrade. I hate the fact that unless you wear your watch all the time, or keep it on a watch winder, it doesn't keep proper time. It was so embarrassing to be out and about, have someone ask me for the time, only to discover that my watch had the incorrect time :o

Ugh, that is a huge disadvantage to me. I do wear more than one watch, so that would be a problem.

I have since gotten a Cartier that keeps perfect time - problem solved! My poor Rolex just sits in a drawer...

Yes, I would buy a quartz watch from jomashop but not a Rolex. Things almost never go wrong with a quartz watch. But it would be an expensive disaster if something went wrong with a Rolex which is why I'd prefer buying that from an AD. The discounts on those aren't enough tempt me to buy gray market. But I would buy a Cartier quartz from jomashop to save $1000 plus sales tax.

Super! Which one did you buy? I appreciate it that you are saving me some money because I have deliberated over this every time there is a watch thread!!! I'd certainly like both ideally, but I know I'd have to have one of those things that keeps the Rolex running when you don't wear it.

Do buy from an authourised dealer. The watches are bloody expensive, and for me, I couldn't stomach the thought of getting a lemon or a fake. That said, there are reputable second hand watch sellers out there, you'll just have to do your homework.

Hi Jane, OMG, yes, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I bought a lemon or a fake one. They cost so much money!

When you get a chance, would you post your watch? Eye candy is awesome. :)
Sorry for not replying earlier. Sadly, I somehow chipped the crystal and my baby is visiting rolex for a new one. $380 for shipping plus parts and labour. Not covered by warranty obviously.

You've decided on the Cartier! Nice! I bought a Gucci watch from jomashop years ago, and it is still going strong.

I dropped my Rolex face down squarely on the marble tile of a hotel bathroom floor pretty much right after I got it. Six weeks and $400 later... I did have the "pleasure" of watching the hands chase little bits of glass trapped inside the cracked (but not broken off) crystal until it finally wound down.

Oh no! At least it's something they can fix and when you get it back, it will be look pretty and brand new.

Good to know about Jomashop and that their watches aren't lemons. I am going to pull the trigger in the next couple of days...hopefully ..

DeeJay, :knockout:
LovelyHearts, YAY!

Soooo I pulled the trigger at Jade Galore! I wasn't comfortable buying from a grey market for something like this. I decided to go with the small solo. The first time I saw the watch, there was plastic on the band so I assumed the band was all glossy steel, which is why I thought the Francaise looked nicer. But my husband asked them to pull back the plastic a little and underneath was a beautiful link of polished and matted steel.

I talked them into giving me a discount. Not much but 5%. They also cleaned, polished and rhodium plated my rings and said they will do it free of charge whenever I want. My husband, who didn't understand why I wanted to spend so much on a watch looked at some rolex watches and now wants one. What did I start here?!

Anyway, I'm so happy! I think I made a great decision at $2k less than my budget! and got to enjoy the experience of purchasing something nice for myself. And thanks to all of you. Thank you so much for helping me! And answering all my silly questions!

LovelyHearts, I liked the small Tank Solo the best all along but didn't want to say anything since you since you seemed to be leaning toward the Francaise. I'm glad you are happy and I love the watch you chose!

You're going to love wearing your watch! Congratulations!

DF, so are you saying you do not use a winder and just reset your watches when you wear them after a break?

Fantastic!!!! It's such a gorgeous watch. I'm super envious of you and

Congrats on your career milestone too!
