Hello Everyone! :wavey:

We are looking to get new carpeting as our daughter will soon be crawling and thought I'd ask, what brand and color you have? We are looking to get a neutral color so if you'd like to show me the color that would be awesome! =)

I appreciate any feedback and advice you might have.

Thanks PSers!!!

Thanks for posting - I need this info too! I'd also love to know what weight pad is best too.

Me too, I look forward to the responses. :-)

And pictures too so I have a real life perspective and not a screen since getting to the store is a bit harder these days.

I would love to get some fresh ideas too! PSers please share what you love, and what you would not recommend as well.

I don't think I would put in another berber-type carpet again. The problem is that if a loop snags, a vacuum can cause it to run much like ladies nylons. Ours was professionally repaired, but I was sick for the weeks before it was restored! I would never go through that again as much as I love the luxury look of the sisal-ish berber carpet.

We just moved and needed to replace all the carpet. I agonized for months, went to every carpet dealer in the area, and considered nearly every type, pattern, and color! It was so much harder than I thought it would be. I was set on getting berber, and dead-set against plush. I wanted a neutral, but happy, straw-ish color - something dark enough to be forgiving but light enough to be bright and well, happy.

In our previous home, I had chosen a light-colored frieze. EVERYONE commented on how much they loved our carpet because it was sooooo soft and such a pretty color. It was a good quality brand/make, and I had it professionally cleaned every six months (young kids and two cats), but it showed the traffic patterns with dirt and mashing. I wasn't going to go with that style or that light of a color again as a result. I had also chosen a plush for another room, and while it looked great, felt great, and was forgiving, it just seemed boring to me. I had always wanted berber but DH was against it because we have two clawed cats.

This time around DH relented on the berber because I wanted it so badly. However, a saleswoman *finally* talked me out of berber for exactly the reason ClassyRocks stated - I didn't want to deal with a run. Plus, the patterns I liked were either low quality (which would add to our fears of something bad happening) or price prohibitive.

I wound up with a nylon plush, in a taupe color. Nearly the opposite of what I started out wanting. The color took so much convincing by salespeople, husband, mom, friends and finally, my own kid. It seemed like it could be too muddy and ugly, and it was not the 'happy' I wanted. But this particular carpet was soooooo soft and luxe that it won out. It was going in the playroom and bedrooms where we'd likely sit or lay on it a lot. For a plush, the pile isn't too high, yet it is thick and silky. It doesn't have a bad directional-change thing either (where it shows really light when you vacuum one way, and really dark the other). They didn't have a color that was just right for me though, and no one else carried anything quite like this plush (believe me, I searched high and low!!). So I had to make it work. When the first room went in, even my husband was gagging over the color. We had a good laugh, it was *that* ugly. However, once it was all finished what a difference!! It truly looks lovely, and is perfect. It's a true neutral, very forgiving, super soft and easy to care for. Love it and so glad I chose based on quality and feel!

It is:
Brand: Masland, salespeople said some people swear by this brand and won't buy anything else
Style: Softly Stated (nothing else was quite as silky soft, not even the Silk by Dupont, plus I liked the lower pile)
Color: I think it was Pony or something, but their site now shows different colors, or maybe just the names changed. It looks like what they have on their site as 'Grullo'. We just had it put in in April, so I'm surprised the colors and/or names have already changed.

Good luck! I hope you find your perfect carpet!

ETA: You can order in a larger sample of any carpet & color you are considering. It usually just takes a couple of days to arrive, and often they will send it directly to you. I highly recommend this, as some of the swatches are so tiny that they don't give you an accurate sense of the color and what it will look like in your space. Colors I was sure were 'it' based on the tiny swatch were SO not it once I got the larger swatch!

Have you considered some kind of non-carpet flooring with rugs? After seeing carpet and padding removed years ago, I vowed that I would never have carpet in a house. There's no way to keep carpet clean. It's a trap for every nasty thing you can think of.

I am curious to hear what others think. We are thinking of carving out a loft style bedroom for our oldest. The first floor of our house does not have any installed carpet (some floor rugs though) but I am considering (when we get around to the project) putting in a carpet, both for comfort but also noise reduction. I also wanted a low/no pile carpet, so thanks for the heads up about the berber carpets.
Also, what do people think of the green/ no emission carpets? I saw some at lowes and they were 4-5 dollars a square foot.

I'm a little baffled because I want to recommend Lee's carpet, it was called 'Lee's For Life' in the mid-90's - very high-quality carpet. We did many rooms in our house with it, it was expensive and beyond our budget, but we got around that by mail-ordering from a retailer 3000 miles away who sold it at a low price. I researched it to recommend to you and apparently it exists but under the Mohawk name, but when I tried to find it on their site, it was difficult...great carpet though, dense, durable.

We use the modular Flor stuff. We have hardwood floors and want the option of easily removing the carpet. Plus if a section somehow gets ruined, we can swap it out for a fresh one.
