Can someone give me a ballpark price on an OEC?

Jeweler called saying he is getting an OEC around 1.67carat, J-k carat, SI. He has not received the GIA report yet ( being sent with the stone) and I have not yet seen the stone. I have a viewing appointment tomorrow. At what price point should this stone be so I know where to start for negotiations. Thank you !

Great data for reference points. If you know what you want the Sheffield’s at US Certed Stones can give you some options.

Right now that carat range is @$4751 per carat for J and $4099 for K.

Click on the price list to see the comps.

Thank you. This is a great reference. Trying to find detail to contact Sheffield’s and can’t seem to find. Could you please be so kind as to link them ?

Not a easy question to answer.
if we were to pretend these two diamonds were same clarity, weight and color - I wouldn’t expect them to be priced the same.

Exactly. For OECs the facet pattern is everything. You need to see it with your own eye or view a high quality video.

I understand. I just wanted a basic, rough guide to per carat price. It’s easy to find this with modern cuts but much harder with older stones

Totally agree with everything @Rfisher and @lovedogs said.

Having just gone through an (exhaustive) search myself I did find that the Sheffield’s were able to get me the most stones to compare. They provided videos on all the finalists. [email protected]

Of course, you can’t go wrong with vendors like Old World Diamonds and Jewels by Grace, too. At the below 2 cts, I hope you will have a lot of options.

Lots of great OEC discussions in PS. PS breeds OEC addiction-at least for me it has :)

Here‘s one Old World Diamonds has, better clarity but similar size.

for the purpose of collecting data, you could look at distinctive gem. he has a couple with similar specs.

Also, I think price per carat goes up as total carat weight goes up. So a one carat K would cost less per carat than a 3 carat K. Sorry if this is obvious.

Ok I got some details but still haven’t seen in person. Thoughts on it ? A2906886-63D3-4AF9-92E2-EC0B0C810364.pngA2906886-63D3-4AF9-92E2-EC0B0C810364.png

Did you get a video? Video is important. You should contact and Dolly and see how much hers is. Her prices are usually very competitive.

63.3% depth has to the potential to be good! One of the OEC experts likes btw 62-65%.

Those are screenshots from the video ( not able to attach video for some reason). He also said he can bring in this other stone for viewing E9EA8882-1195-4A83-9F78-D802C99473EB.pngE9EA8882-1195-4A83-9F78-D802C99473EB.png

@dhimer video would really help people evaluate the stones

So price wise from skimming through OWD, it's in the ballpark of 12k give or take for a diamond of those specs. :)

Good luck! I hope you attach more photos/videos.

You need some expert eyes to weigh in but in the 1.4 ct J too many petals seem to go dark at the same time.

Im not an old cut expert...but I’m not actually crazy about either, but I like the K more. Agree with @lulu_ma - the J goes too dark in the middle. I’d pass on that for sure.

The K - the facets just seem kinda messy, and not in a charming way to me. The facets are livelier - they go “on and off” at different times which is what you want, but don’t have a pleasing pattern in the center to me. But that is my preference

Do you have a sense of your preferences? There are different style of OECs. Some look more like a snowflake, or a flower, or a checkerboard. Some are older, and may be quirkier and less symmetrical but are more like Old Mine Cuts which can be very charming! Some are more recent - and are closer to “transitional” cuts.

Before deciding between either of these, I’d look at some websites and figure out what looks most pleasing to YOUR eyes. Something I find pleasing, you might not like! Jewels by grace takes great photos! There are also a lot of threads that have images of OECs right here on Pricescope. Is there an example that makes your heart flutter?

I’m not sure what your budget is, but Grace actually has 3 stones in J color, and between 1.5-1.7 carats and each is about 10k. They aren’t inexpensive but they each have a slightly different flavor of the classic “flower” pattern under the table. My eye is drawn to the 3rd but I couldn’t really explain why - someone with more knowledge might hopefully weigh in!

@dhimer How do the JBG prices compare to the ones you are looking at?

Thank you for your feedback. I guess the search is still on. I just came across this type of stone recently from PS boards and fell in love with it I like the flower pattern the most I would say. I will take a look at JBG.

The colors in the video of that last stone ❤️❤️❤️ Will look at what else I can find there

They are about the same. I guess I was looking more “local” because I was weary of being scammed/duped. But seems like there are some reputable online vendors of old stones

Oh the 1.53 is a beauty. Some of the most beautiful OEC's on PS are from JBG and OWD. Both dealers are very established.

I think reputable in that this is the majority of their work, this is their specialty. There is nothing wrong with looking local if that is what they specialise in. Unfortunately a lot of places sell mainly modern cuts and don't have access or knowledge about old cuts.

It's like going to BMW to ask for a Toyota :)
