A question... can solitaire mounts for round stones be easily modified to fit an oval stone?

I have an oval blue topaz I wish to set into a very plain solitaire setting, similar to the one pictured below:

I have found the ideal setting but it fits an 8mm round stone. My topaz is oval, 8x6mm. Can a jeweller just shorten the 4 side prongs to accomodate for the oval stone? Or am I getting into something too complicated here?

Has anyone done this?

If the head is not integral to the semi-mount, it should not be a problem. Just get the jeweller to remove the round head, and replace it with an oval.

This is what I was going to say. But it looks from your picture, that the head is part of the ring, rather than a so called ''peg-head''. So in your case you would have to manipulate the prongs. I don''t know how possible that is, sorry.

Thanks for your replies, guys! I''m thinking this one might not work.

Has anyone seen anything like this online, for an 8x6 oval stone? It''s for my mum''s birthday, I''d like a YG band, WG head and like the picture, thin and plain. She''s not a blingy girl!

Take a look here. There''s 770 settings for oval stones...

Stuller doesn''t sell direct to the consumer, but you''ll need a jeweller to set the stone anyway.

Thanks, OMC!

I also had a custom made ring like the one you have pictured. They bought a shank and a head and put it all together for about $200. It was for a 6.5 x 4.5 oval.

Sure, they can make a solitaire setting for any shape stone!

Thanks, marcy and ds! I think I''ll go the custom route on this one, I just can''t find quite what I want. Thankyou!

Custom usually runs a bit more but it''s usually worth it to get what you want. I can''t wait to see your finished ring.
