First, I want to thank this forum for all the helpful advice. Both my fiancee and I wish we had tumbled upon this forum a bit sooner.
Here is my question. I have a .30 carat - platinum e-ring from T & Co. It''s the classic 6 prong -knife edge tiff setting. Can I use the same setting to let''s see upgrade to a larger diamond, maybe in the 0.6 -0.7 carat range? Given my line of work, anything bigger would not be suited for everday wear.
Most importantly, is this a good idea?
We looked into upgrading at tiff but after reading all the info here, I don''t like the idea of him paying a premium twice in a row.
I appreciate any thoughts in this one.

I know that jewelers will special order the prongs to accomidate a certain size diamond, so my intial reaction and thought would be that you probably could use the setting if you replaced the prong head. I''d also suggest that you speak directly with the jeweler you''re considering to do the work before making your final decision. Also, just for the sake of education, you might want to figure out what the spec of your diamond are and what the specs are of your ideal upgrade and compare the two.

Unfortunately it is extremely unlikely that you could use the setting as is. I doubt the head will fit a diamond that much bigger. But if you really want to try, go to a local jeweler and ask.

interesting... i bet they could match the head and use the band though... you''d still have your "Tiffany & Co." stamp on it. LOL

Oh, I would not alter a Tiffany e-ring unless Tiffany did it! I would do the one time trade-up at Tiffany so you can still have a real Tiffany ring. If you don''t want to go that route, I''d leave the current ring as is and either save it or sell it. But you''ll likely take away all the Tiffany value if you replace the head and diamond.

I see. I wonder if tiff might just replace the setting along with the diamond. I can''t depart with the whole thing !
You all have given me food for thought. I might just keep my e-ring and consider me buying a new one, which might go along better with the wedding band I''m considering. My sparkly .3 carat looks rather out of scale with most wedding bands I''ve tried. Not that I have to wear both rings at the same time anyway!
I''m not really sure. Thank you all for your opinions.

Say for argument, oyu bought the cheapest Tiffany 6 prong rinng they have (i.e smallest diamond)... No idea what that costs, but say maybe $3k-$4k.... Any then you went out and got a 2ct diamond put on it (with new prongs obviously)... In that case the Tiffany value is null anyhow, because you replaced the stone with something much more valuable... Essentially you paid 3x as much for a band as you should for a solitaire platinum setting, but you still have the Tiffany % Co band...

I think Deverappraiser has said b/f that this is already being done and basically one of the ways people are gettings scammed on ebay etc. thinking they are buying a real tiffany completed ring.

i agree with DS, don''t mess with the Tiffany ring, unless tiffany will do it.

I wouldn''t mess with it either unless Tiffanys would do it for you. Also signedpieces have a .65 tiffany solitaire at the moment. Maybe they could arrange something with you if you were to trade your original ring. here''s the link tiffany solitaire

WOW . Now there is a great idea. Thank you. The ring looks superb. Something to consider.
My fiancee got some quotes from tiff today, that come close pricewise to the ring in signedpieces. I am not sure about the specs on the tiff diamond. Maybe there is where the difference lies. I bet the signedpieces is of better quality.

This will come as an odd question since most of you are more familiar with vendors than I am but can someone provide some feedback re. signedpieces ?

They are a reputable vendor and there have been many purchases by PriceScope members. I would feel safe buying their designer pieces and would trust that they are genuine. They have too much to lose to misrepresent things. In any event, they have a good return policy if you order something and decide to return it.

But I agree that that is an excellent way to get a larger Tiffany ring!

That''s the thing. I don''t really care if it''s tiff or not. I suggested tiff as we both knew very little about diamonds. I felt at the time that Tiff was the safer choice as they had done some of the homework already for the buyer - I was sold on the "higher standards" quote. Plus, we had a little bit of an advantage in terms of budget since my preference was for a small diamond. However, based on the standard size of most e-rings today, I might have gone WAY too small. I see now. I''m finding it very hard to find an eternity band that would go well with a small diamond. I''m kind of set in the eternity band idea.

My original thought was to salvage something out of the original ring, for sentimental reasons, and upgrade the stone. Based on the info. I got from tiff. I would have to give up the whole ring! I guess they don''t do custom work. Please correct me if I''m wrong.
