Can I get some setting advice for an OEC?

I have a 1.42ct, 7mm, L color OEC, and am looking for some input in the setting. Before I got the stone, I had been planning on having a hexagon or octagon frame setting made for it. I already have a 1ct asscher solitaire in 18k rose gold, so I was thinking that adding angles in the setting of the OEC would look nice if I ever wear the 2 rings together. Here's a photo of the stone:

And wrapped in a rose gold chain to see the color:

I imagined having a thin (maybe 1mm? 1.5mm?) frame with milgrain, and little claw prongs that come up from the frame to hold the stone in place. Imagine the milgrain and size of this frame (and maybe color? I can't tell if it's rose gold):

with the angular shape of Dreamer's ring:

I would also imagine the band being plain/smooth, without any etching or milgrain.

Any thoughts on this setting idea? What I'm having trouble picturing is how the ring would look in profile. I want the profile to basically look like a standard solitaire setting, but then I'm not sure how the frame shape would fit into that.

AND, to throw a monkey wrench into things, now that I have the stone, I keep staring at it and thinking it is so pretty all on its own, that maybe I should just put it into a solitaire similar to this one:

If you have strong feelings on which way to go, let me know! I had planned to do a more interesting setting with this stone since my asscher is so simple. However, I really like simple, so I could go either way.

And finally, I worked with ERD on my asscher setting, but am considering both ERD or OWD for this one. I have no idea if one would be preferable to the other, so if you do, that would be great to know!

Gorgeous OEC! I have a personal soft spot for octagon settings - but anything you set it into will be gorgeous!

An OEC can look great in any kind of setting, so the questions I'd ask you are: 1. is your personal style more ornate/vintage, or more simple and modern? 2. Are you looking to boost the face up size of the diamond, or do you love the size as-is (because an octagon style setting will make your diamond appear much larger)? 3. What band(s) are you planning to wear it with? 4. How active are you? Do you use your hands a lot? Are you willing to baby the ring a little (removing it for gardening, working out, etc.?) The octagon style setting will protect the girdle of the diamond more than a 4-prong solitaire.

Just some food for thought - good luck with your decision, and welcome to the old cut club! Congrats on choosing a beautiful diamond!

Great advice from Erica, but I'll place my vote for the octagonal setting! I love OEC's in antique style settings, and Dreamer's is one of my favorites!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking more about whether I want a more ornate / vintage style setting, and I think I tend to like things to be more clean and simple. But I thought if I had a thin frame like in the 1st ring, on a plain band, maybe it would look more modern? Or maybe not. I'm wondering if the milgrain frame on a plain band would look odd.

I also didn't realize I'd have to be more careful with the 4-prong setting. I don't do anything that's overly hard on my hands, but I'm also not especially careful with my jewelry, and wouldn't want to have to be. Lots to think about. I got a quote from ERD for just under 2k for the hexagon-style setting. It's a bit more than I expected, so I want to be sure before I decide!

With any diamond, the more you can protect the girdle, the better. This is especially true for old cuts, since they often have very thin girdles. You can still do a simple solitaire, but may want to consider 6 or 8 prongs. Or just insure it and enjoy it in any setting you like, but have the peace of mind that it will be covered. 9 times out of 10, nothing happens - I've set many old cuts into 4 prong settings and people wear them with no problems.

I think that stone would be very happy in an octagon setting....
