Can a round brilliant MMD be recut to an OEC?

Had this idea this morning but not sure how feasible this would be. Maybe just have my head in the clouds ;)

If I bought a Lightbox diamond, let’s say two carat, could that be recut into an OEC and what would the potential loss in weight be? I’m thinking at LB prices plus price of recut that it would still be less expensive than buying an OEC MMD currently. This is especially true because so few vendors even offer this cut in MMD.

Surely it’s not this simple and I’m missing something?

This is genius!
I applaud you for looking at all the angles.
Hopefully, the recut will not be cost prohibiting.
If you can do this, It will be amazing.

@stracci2000, I am the queen of ideas but very few become reality lol! I appreciate the support though and hey maybe it can be done. It would certainly open up the possibility of having an OEC for a lot of people.

Didn’t a PS member have a thread about doing this?
I think it was @xxxxxx
And if I remember correctly they were pretty happy with the results and said it was an economical route?

Thank you! I’ll search and see if I can find it.

Yes, this can be done, and has been. Finding someone willing to recut a MMD might be the trickier part (although this may have changed since I last looked in to it).

Potential weight loss would depend on the style of OEC the diamond would be re-cut in to and how well the existing angles of the MRB lign up with the desired angles of the OEC. Another question to answer would be are you trying to maximize size or optical performance?

it wasn’t from lightbox, but same enough MRB MMD cut to OEC concept.

Thank you @vintageinjune and @Rfisher, it seems like Lightbox wouldn’t be ideal for this type of project because from what I’ve read you need certain angles to get a good result. Also it seems MMD material is harder to cut. Interesting idea though.

I had a lab-grown MRB recut into a transitional and was very happy with the result.

@Kim N, I knew I couldn’t be the first person to dream up this idea! Do you have pictures of the before and after? I would love to see them!

I never saw the before in person, but here's the after. It was primarily a pavilion recut to shorten the lower halves. The crown angle and table size remained the same.

Wow that is amazing @Kim N, what a gorgeous stone!

Oh my that is lovely.

@YadaYadaYada I dont think we’ve seen any posts from people who have bought OEC from Tianyu. They might be able to beat the cost of using LB as rough and paying for re-cut.

If you’re willing to answer, who did the recut for you? I’d love to have an OEC but the cost is quite prohibitive for me at the moment.

I wouldn’t even know where to look for someone to do the recut if I did decide to do this!

It was Southwest Diamond Cutters in Dallas. They've done recuts for many PSers. Buying an OEC or transitional outright was cost-prohibitive for me at the time as well, but there are more lab OEC vendors now than there were before. Have you looked into Tianyu (as @oncrutchesrightnow mentioned), Ouros, or Fiorese?

I just posted pictures of my recut into the lightbox 2ct thread (because somebody asked for pictures there).

Thank you so much for the information!

Tianyu or Ouros would definitely be a consideration! I actually just had a ring made so I’m (trying) to wait at least a few months before starting a new project. :) I’m also not sure if I’d want the OEC set into a ring or a pendant at this point. PS has not been kind to my wallet!

When I do finally start looking for my first OEC, I’ll check into Tianyu and Ouros first and keep the information about Southwest Diamond Cutters in case I decide to go that route.

So is the general consensus that one of the overseas vendors would be cheaper to source a lab diamond from for this project than LB? Just curious because I have no idea what Tianyu (for example) sells lab diamonds for. Granted, not starting this project now, just gathering info.
