Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a ring and diamond online from HP Diamonds and having it shipped to me in Australia. It seems that there are two main taxes that one can be hit with when importing to Australia - 10% GST plus another 5% (unless the completes does the correct customs form to take advantage of the US / Aust free trade agreement).

It seems like there's a way of avoiding the additional 5% charge if your vendor is aware of how to take advantage of the US / Aust free trade agreement so i'm interested if anyone has purchased from HP Diamonds and what their experience was / what import costs they were required to pay?

Thanks so much in advance!

I haven't purchased from HP Diamonds, but have had other US vendors ship to me in Australia. Usually at my request they have completed the relevant AUSFTA paperwork, and you just pay GST and customs (so 10% of the cost of the item, plus about $80) when the piece arrives. Otherwise, you can pay all costs to get the piece delivered, and then fill out the AUSFTA paperwork to have the 5% refunded. The latter takes a few weeks, but I have always received the money back.

My impression was that you pay 10% tax and if the diamond is set in a ring then you have to pay a further 5% tax. I’m from Australia and I recently bought a loose diamond and was charged only 10% tax when the diamond arrived at customs

You can get 5% duty waived on the whole ring. The key is to have the AUSFTA form and the ring should state origin of manufacture as USA. Contact the vendor.

If the ring is made in USA, You will only need to pay the 10% gst and the customs processing fee of around $180. Wink is fully across the required paperwork. :)

just curious if the tax is less if purchasing from UK?

Likely to be more- 20% VAT plus duty on some items plus processing fee (varies).

When I buy from the US I usually expect the price in dollars to be roughly what I’ll end up paying in GBP overall.

I think it will work out probably equivalent with FX. VAT afaik is not collected by UK sellers on items being sent overseas but you'll pay the 10% GST and 5% duty on arrival in Australia if there's no similar arrangement likes AUSFTA. I've not bought jewellery from the UK so don't know specifically.
