Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for life

Does this happen!

Can you offer advice about what people should plan to buy or should we just go along as we wish?

I have given my wife so much jewelry over the years that at one point she asked me not to get her any more. Fourteen years later I saw something I loved too much not to get it for her and she asked me why I stopped. I reminded her that she told me to. She said she had NOT expected me to think that she meant it to be forever, just not for a couple of years.

Now, after 42 years of marriage and 45 years of being together, she told me she wants a pair of diamond studs. I gave her a pair of small D-IF trillions about 15 years ago, but now she says she can no longer do without some of the rounds that I sell. I guess that is what I get for showing her the matched pair of 2 cts each that I sold recently. (My wife's new pair will be MUCH smaller!)

So no, I do not think a woman, or a man who likes jewelry, ever really stops seeing something that they would like from time to time. I have actually been thinking I need to get a new ring made one of these days my own self...

Sorry pyramid, for the thread jack. I guess given my recent purchase the answer would be no. If nothing changes for us dramatically, I'm done with big rocks. I would like to get Cartier and VCA pieces. These require a lot of thought and deliberation, more so than diamond staples. I have very few pieces compared to other PSers. But my thing is that I want to wear every piece of jewelry I have every day. So that limits what I buy. I bugs me to have a Tiffany soleste sitting unworn. It bugs to even have bands not used daily. I just want to sell them.

I find this to be true too - having to give signed pieces a lot more thought. And I think I'm the same way - I want two or three "sets" that I can wear regularly, vs. a more varied collection. A "flowery set", a "simple set", a "vintage set"... Having just a couple of styles to focus on definitely helps prevent IsPrettyWantIt syndrome

Serves you right, indeed!

Your wife is most certainly worth a spectacular pair of Infinity rounds... and a handful more just for having dealt with the hours you apparently keep for 45 years

I nominated her for Saint hood, but the Vatican told me she would only have qualified if she was Catholic. So I bought her another rock as a consolation prize.

She deserves so much more, but it was her lot in life and she has borne it well.

I lost interest in acquiring jewelry several years ago after a 3 yr. shopping spree that also included a lot of designer bags, shoes, and clothes. My head still likes beautiful jewels, but my heart isn't in it anymore, at least for important pieces. I knew that for sure when, 2 yrs. ago at the Pricescope get together, I tried on a 5 carat pear that DH said I could have if I wanted it and I passed (Yenny and Diamondseeker, if you're reading this, do you remember that ring? It was gorgeous). I still buy small colored stones from time to time.

Don't have any advice other than buy what you want, when you want as long as you can afford it and it makes you happy.

Yes, I DO remember! I had such fun shopping with that group!

* * * * * * * * *

My advice is to focus on the basic staple pieces and upgrade until you get what you really want. The engagement ring and studs are pieces that I do wear daily and I had to upgrade to figure out what I wanted! I do not need 100 pairs of earrings because really, I have the studs, pearls, white gold woven hoops, and my sapphire halos and I really wear no others. So it was important to me to get the studs the size I really want. I was limited by what was available when I decided to do it, so I ended up with 1.15 cts each (Whiteflash ACAs). In my real life, those are more than adequate for all occasions. I could see myself with 1.3-1.5 each but I am trying to just be content with what I have. My long platinum DBTY is one of my favorite pieces and it can be worn with almost anything, and I am glad to have m2b's matching bracelet now, as well! I have the three Beaudry right hand rings that I rarely wear, so I have little need for numerous right hand rings. It is good to have one or two great watches. I wear my Tank Francaise daily as it is a very casual watch. I sometimes consider getting the Ballon Bleu just because I love Cartier watches so much! I also think about getting an emerald cut diamond ring.

I have a few other nice things like necklaces and bracelets, but I am in total agreement with those who say they want to have pieces they really wear rather than having a lot that sits in a jewelry box. I also am very interested in some VCA and Cartier pieces, but I am not sure whether the investment is worth it considering my limited occasions to wear the pieces. In any event, I am pretty much like Yssie wanting the basics and a couple of alternates of things. I'd rather have a few great things than many mediocre things, so I'd rather be patient and get better quality pieces. That is the advice I would give any young jewelry lover.

For the VCA fans, Brightice and I were very lucky on Friday in Vegas to go in VCA when there were several sales people and no customers. We had a friendly and enthusiastic sales person who let us try on things as well as tell us a lot of history of the jewels created by VCA. We must have been in there a couple of hours! Yssie your Magic Alhambra earrings are absolutely fabulous! You are really creating a great collection! I'll attach a couple of photos..some of the Alhambra pieces I want, the Perlee bracelets I adore (but just won't pay that much), and a masterpiece of jewelry art watch.

VCA / Cartier bug has bitten me hard!

TURQUOISE SWEET!!! I've been meaning to ask what you've been up to on the VCA front

It looks wonderful on you!! That bright summer teal suits your skin so well  do you see any green in it IRL? It looks greenish in your pic, and I know VCA's turquose can have a bit of variation... Oh my goodness it looks fantastic with your H and your gigantic tennis bracelet! Do you wear that stack regularly?

Hi Yssie, I'm gonna be brave and start a branded pieces thread so we don't thread jack this one anymore. :D See u there.

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

I totally, completely understand the philosophy of fewer, luxury-brand items. I like branded items, too. I have Tiffany gold and platinum pieces, three Cartier pieces, one Faberge Paris, five from Kiki McDonough, and items from BGD and WF.

BUT, these items all represent good value within that brand - i.e. they are not the most outrageously expensive items in the range. And many I bought from estate jewelers, including the Faberge and two of the three Cartier pieces. The BGD was bought in the Black Friday sale, and I got 20% off the Kiki pieces and no entry/customs fees. When I bought some of the Kiki items together, I asked Berry's for a discount if I got two pieces at the same time, and they gave it to me.

However, when it comes to most Cartier pieces, VCA, and the extra-expensive Tiffany ranges like Victoria, I just can't bring myself to spend so much money on one thing. It simply isn't worth it to me. I say that while rationally realizing the total sense of investment pieces!

I would say one thing, though. Just because a collection is broad with many pieces, it doesn't mean that any of them are mediocre. I absolutely love every one of my 150-odd pieces, and I bought most of them because I couldn't resist their beauty. I adore everything I've got, and I've got something for every mood, season, style, and outfit, from vintage to Art Deco to modern! As for letting things sit in the jewelry box and only wearing a few items, most of what we wear is just habit. DS, I think you should make a habit of wearing those right-hand rings!

I very much feel the same way. I don't - nor have I ever - bought multiples of anything. My upgrading was always within the confines of what I owned save for a couple of bracelets. I have all of the 'staple' pieces and still love every one of them. I enjoy wearing them every day and feel that they are my signature pieces. Unless something truly fantabulous came along, I think I am probably finished too. I never say never though because life is an ever changing event and I certainly can't predict the future! I still love looking at jewelry that others acquire - nothing better than seeing someone ultra excited over some new sparkly!

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

Like some of you I am pretty satisfied with what I have right now. I recently upgraded my e-ring and got a classic Tiffany band and a plain band to wear with it. I have a simple Rolex watch and a great sized pair of studs that I wear every day. I alternate between two right hand rings, two bracelets, and two pendants depending upon whether I want to be casual or more dressed up. That is all I ever really put on anymore. I do still enjoy seeing other people's pieces though!

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

Forgot to post my own response. I've got a few more major pieces to go (over an expanded period of time before the kiddos go off to college) now that I've consolidated my collection. DH likes to buy me jewelry for holidays/special occasions so will continue to receive smaller branded pieces in the meantime.

Here I stand !

...

Must have ended buying 'jewelry' for random fun when the man who did this with me was no more - he was my father & I was very small. Such education has consequences: I could imagine myself assemblying a research collection of jewels (this has happened - somewhat), rather than anything.

I do need earrings & one ring at a time. The letter came as mementos from hefty rounds of life & we did bond. Now, there is time for a new one.

Of course there is always enough !

A few outré designs are living on paper.

Thank you for asking a good question @pyramid

I like this thread.

I planned to stop but lately have bought a ton of stuff.

I just want a pair of Kiki blue topaz earrings, a blue topaz necklace downtown that I've seen, a silver Tiffany heart necklace, and a pair of diamond floral earrings that I like from Blue Nile. And maybe that white gold ice skate with a diamond blade that I was considering last winter.

Then I really AM done!

I think it is age, plus, my onetime experience with a bad jeweller, and the rest work very long. (And then there was a vendor, when I understood that even "seven days return policy" is not a guarantee). So because of these two experiences, I lost interest.
I have two stones that I am still interested in. The rest is very optional. If i don't buy an item with one of these stones, no biggie. The other i would still like to have, but they are expensive.

No, I'm not finished - but I almost am. I'm not a person who needs to endlessly tweak things: for example - I have a friend who regularly rearranges her furniture. I tend to believe in optimum arrangements, so when I find that - I stop. I'm the same with jewelry; I had a list, and I've been working my way through it. When I get to the end, I'm done.

I find that ALL my projects these days are setting stones I already own, and I've torn apart and sold a number of pieces I've found I don't wear. I have a large collection of beautiful things, and I'm planning to finish next year when I turn my 3.61ct solitaire into a 7ctw 3 stone. At the moment I'm working on a gold necklace (long and VERY heavy) and redoing my flower diamond pendant to complete my flower set to a coherent standard (the pendant wasn't good quality). I plan to do one more ring for Christmas, then the 3 stone next March. Then that's it. The list hasn't changed for a long time, and the only thing that's shifted is getting rid of more pieces, rather than adding to the list. Like a lot of long time collectors, I suspect, it will be a relief to finish.

I wanted to finish, and then I saw this...new lavender amethyst piece on the Kiki website:

Pink Heart.PNG

mrs-b - I agree that it would be a relief to finish. I was always mailing a piece to swap it for another (just done that with some Kiki studs) or telling a jeweler I didn't like a custom piece, or trying to work out from online photos what the actual dimensions of a piece were...and buying colored stones online is difficult.

I just have to stop seeing jewelry that I want!

I tell myself I'm done whenever I get something, but I always see something else. I will never be done.

I am finished. I'm moving on to other things. There is one nagging project to complete, which is to reset a .76 RB so I can wear it again. It's falling off my finger and can't be resized again. That's it. Everything/anything else will be small, very small items. I'm okay with it.

I think my jewelry purchases are pretty much done. I'm so glad I read the replies in this thread. I was starting to think something was wrong with me because I have tired of shopping. My husband is nearing retirement so I'm actually kind of glad my priorities have changed. I would rather spend money on visiting dear friends who live out of town, taking fun trips with my husband or doing nice things for family members who are short on money than buying jewelry.

I thought I had, then I joined PS and started thinking, ooooooo, that's nice, I'd like that:rolleyes2:

I thought I was done until the other day when my husband suggested I get bigger diamond studs lol! I feel an excitement about getting them that I haven't felt in a long time. The only other thing I think I would like at some point is a diamond tennis bracelet. Sometimes I daydream about a larger diamond solitaire ring but that is not in my future. I'm very satisfied with my current ring though; I never thought I'd ever own a diamond of this size and I'm grateful to have it.

It was interesting for me to read my reply above from 2 years ago. I doubt I'll ever be finished since it is my hobby, but I am close to being finished with the major diamond pieces and don't really desire much more for myself. Since the last post, I added a second e-ring, the antique asscher, and I have to restrain myself from adding an antique cushion or AVC. I did make a lavender sapphire halo ring, and I am making a small ring now. I just did a slight but final upgrade to my studs. I have bought a VCA solid gold Alhambra bracelet since that last post, and it is something I can wear far more than a diamond bracelet since it can work with casual or dressy clothes. I'll probably add just a couple more pieces to go with that.

One thing I have started is collecting second hand, small pairs of diamonds (all ACAs, so far) for all my girls! I plan to make studs and pendants for our little grandaughters for later on, and I want to give my daughters a few nice starter pieces. I will occasionally go ahead and gift pieces from my collection that I love but rarely wear, as well.

HI:

Well unless my life ends tomorrow..... :cheeky:

....just a few more things....... ....that said, no more watches. Finished watch shopping.

cheers--Sharon

Quoting myself. lol No more stuff for me...in fact I wish to downsize! Need to have a fire sale :lol-2:

:D This is a great topic! I have accumulated a nice size collection and really don't need any more jewelry but I love the hunt! I really enjoy scouring the local pawn shop, eBay and loupe troupe. I have gifted a couple pieces to my sisters that I love but don't wear. I also have passed down a tiny locket and plan to pass down my diamond solitaire pendant to my grandaughter when she is a little older (then I will have to get a bigger one, darn). I love to look through, organize and play with my jewelry. I am sure I will continue to collect. It makes me happy!

I thought I had, then I joined PS and started thinking, ooooooo, that's nice, I'd like that:roll2:

Austina, Pricescope has a way of making you feel 5 carats is the standard size an engagement ring should be. Well at least that is how I felt. I was very happy with my 2.20 carat engagement ring before I found Pricescope. Within a year of joining Pricescope my husband had surprised me with a 3.43 new diamond and I STILL wanted a larger diamond. I'm so glad I am pretty much back to my old self now. Last year was a very rough year for my family and it looks like this year will probably be as well with family members having serious health issues. Diamonds don't even come close to making my priority list anymore. I'm just glad I'm back to appreciating the beautiful jewelry I am lucky enough to have.

I will forever be grateful to Pricescope for giving me a couple of the best friends a person could ever hope to have. I have always been lucky to have great friends in my life so my standards are pretty high.

I totally agree @Calliecake, and I'm so sorry things are difficult for you, I do hope they improve.

I really wouldn't want a 5 ct diamond, I'd be too worried about wearing it, so it would sit in the safe, and what would be the point of that? I can admire everyone else's and be happy for them, but it would be wasted on me.

One thing that PS has opened my eyes to and that is getting things remodelled, which I hadn't really thought about before, I'd always assumed it would be too difficult or expensive, so now, rather than buy more, I'm going to remodel some pieces so that I'll actually wear them.

Well, I just turned 30, and we've only just hit the point in our careers where we're comfortable splashing out on luxuries here and there, so...no. That said, we have a lot of priorities for our kids and family life that will come far above jewelry in terms of spending importance, so I only plan to collect a handful of nicer things that I'll wear all the time. It's a short list, but I hope to check a few things off of it over the years. :mrgreen2:

"Finished shopping..." :eh: what is this strange concept?

Seriously I'll never be done with jewelry & gems but to be fair I've barely bought anything over the years mostly due to tight finances - I window shop A LOT! Clothes, shoes & handbags etc I couldn't care less about. It's all about the gemstone bling for me, that's my true passion.
