Are there any people here who follow the boards or have just popped in for the first time who have finished jewelry shopping for life :shifty:

Does this happen!

Can you offer advice about what people should plan to buy or should we just go along as we wish?

I lost interest in acquiring jewelry several years ago after a 3 yr. shopping spree that also included a lot of designer bags, shoes, and clothes. My head still likes beautiful jewels, but my heart isn't in it anymore, at least for important pieces. I knew that for sure when, 2 yrs. ago at the Pricescope get together, I tried on a 5 carat pear that DH said I could have if I wanted it and I passed (Yenny and Diamondseeker, if you're reading this, do you remember that ring? It was gorgeous). I still buy small colored stones from time to time.

Don't have any advice other than buy what you want, when you want as long as you can afford it and it makes you happy.

My husband wishes I could say that.

"finished shopping"? There... there can be such a thing?

LOL, I thought I was finished 11 years ago when I bought my first tennis bracelet from Wink (and already had four e-ring diamonds).

Well last year I went crazy: Tiffany Fancy Yellow diamond, which lead to the FIY parcel that made another tennis bracelet and pendant.
That lead to my Cut to Order CBI diamond.

Am I finished? I think so, but then Wink has that 100% CBI trade in policy ... hmmm is an upgrade in the future? :shhh:

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

As for me personally, not for a long time will I be done. I have a list of what I want & most items are single items so perhaps I might finish sooner rather than later. I agonize when I buy something because I want to choose wisely & I don't want to repeat shapes or styles be it coloured stones or diamonds. Most of my collection are colourless diamonds.

So..no not finished for life. If diamond prices go up, that might finish me. :(

LOL Cheryl...those pesky trade up policy's are very tantalizing. :wink2:

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

I am done with all jewellery except for one item; one small replacement coloured stone for an existing setting so I'm taking my time on that.

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

I have no major bling purchases on the horizon. Right now we have 2 major home projects planned for the immediate future and beyond and that's it. I have no desire to purchase major bling and hope I am sort of done with that. Small bling purchases like earrings (I am an earring ho) are really all I plan on getting for the future. I am bling satiated. :halo:

Matata I love your sage advice and agree completely. Buy what you want as long as you can afford it and it brings you enjoyment. :appl:

Pyramid, the only comments I will add is that planning everything too carefully and far out into the future re bling purchases out can backfire. Sometimes you just fall in love with a piece and you have to have it and also preferences can and usually do change. Plan but don't over plan and be flexible to change re your preferences. And most importantly have fun with it and enjoy. :appl:

One more thing to add. I find that much of the fun and joy from bling shopping comes from the search itself. The process makes me happy and brings me countless hours of joyful involvement. Something to think about and remember. Taking one's time is often a good thing to allow the process to be fully enjoyed.

This is why I am on Pricescope so often; I love the search and get my "fix" by helping others. I have more jewellery than I can possibly wear, even if on a rotation basis, plus the human lifespan is short, so it is best that I enjoy what I currently have.

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

There was a poster here a few months ago who was bound and determined to complete her wishlist and finish buying jewellery (branded and unbranded) within a span of a few months. If I remember correctly she cited concerns about forever increasing prices as her primary motivation... whilst IMO that is a valid concern - we all know how luxury market pricing works  - I don't believe it's a realistic or productive objective for most people: styles change, preferences change, priorities change, means change.

I don't think I'll ever be done. That said, I've made some questionable buying choices and have some regrets - they're excellent reminders to be wary of jumping on something without careful consideration. For the past couple of years I've followed a "sleep on it for a week" policy with larger purchases and that's been working very well for me ::) I'm in the process of having a pair of earrings made that I will quite literally never be able to upgrade even if I want to one day, because my household will never, ever bring in sufficient income to seriously contemplate doing so, and it's the first project of that sort for me - the first project wherein I can say with absolute certainty that I've truly reached my maximum spending capacity. It's... humbling. And for that particular flavour of jewellery I am finished - out of necessity!

I'm more interested in buying branded pieces these days as they're far more mind-clean in terms of long-term value. Having trawled every last one of the VCA threads on TPF and communed with the ghosts of VCA discussions past... I'm going to make buying branded pieces I'm interested in a priority because five years from now I suspect I'll be very, very glad I did!

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

You know, I think I have finished for life. I've got so much jewelry that it really would be crazy to buy much more. Most of it isn't posted on Pricescope because it would take forever to photograph it all (however, I am going to put some choice pieces up. I have a sapphire and diamond pendant, an egg pendant from Faberge Paris, and a ton of amazing pearls from Pearl Paradise, a diamond maple pendant from Birks, and a few more items).

I'll have to count, but I probably have about 150 - 175 pieces of fine jewelry. (That includes less expensive items like Tiffany silver and various Blue Nile pieces for about $200.) Like Chrono, I feel I have more than I could ever wear, but actually, if you wear earrings, necklace, ring and bracelet every day, that's four pieces. Four times 30 - you can wear 120 pieces in a month, and rotate the whole collection in about six weeks!

Because I like the chase, though, I have taken to buying some inexpensive but very pretty rock and mineral jewelry from a local store. Things like tiger eye, green onyx, Inca rose, turquoise, larimar, etc.

But in terms of fine jewelry, I really think I'm finished. I might buy the tourmaline flower pendant that I posted about, and there's a pair of silver and ruby earrings from the rock and mineral store that I like, and then I'm done. I've enjoyed buying inexpensive, fun items, but I have to stop now because that, too, can get to be a waste of money. Between fine jewelry and fun inexpensive things, I seriously have more than anyone should have.

However, I'm hoping to get at least three more decades in, might get four if I"m very lucky. So hopefully I have plenty of time to enjoy the things I've bought in the last few years. But it's time once more to save, accrue, etc. I'm glad I had a jewelry spree. Now I get to enjoy it all! I've bought it so fast that I haven't even worn a lot of it yet!

I also realized that even if I could afford a 3 carat DEF Brian Gavin Signature stone, I probably wouldn't want to spend the money, even if I had multi millions. To me, it's just not worth it, I get so much pleasure out of items costing much less. I've tried on a couple of large diamonds and although they're lovely, they're simply not worth the huge money to me. My pear bezeled halo satisfies me with the look of a large-ish diamond ring, and was well under 2k. You know what I realized when trying on really expensive jewelry? Items costing 25k don't look so very different from items costing about 2k. The reason? I figured out that most of the impact of a jewelry item is in the first 1k spent. I don't find you get much more "look" or impact relative to the money spent when you go into the tens of thousands. (This applies to jewelry pieces, like pendants and dress rings, not single diamonds, although I tried on two 25k diamond solitaire rings and I didn't think they looked anything like 23k better than my pear halo.) Just my opinion, anyway!

So basically yes, I'm done with jewelry shopping! I'd almost say I'm a tiny bit bored with it...

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

ETA: In my opinion, the best way to stay finished is not to look at jewelry at all. Not to go to any jewelry stores or look online. When I look, I always find things that I like.

It also helps that there's really nothing I want now. I vaguely consider the Cartier sweet trinity or baby trinity necklace, then it just slips out of my mind - I think it's not a good enough value for me, personally. And then I consider a BGD princess in their milgrained square bezel setting, and again my mind just slips off it. Same with the Kiki McDonough super-expensive drops and hoops. You know how when it's something you really want, you keep thinking about it? I can't think of anything I feel like that about any more. It's kind of sad, but also healthy - gotta stop sometime!

Yssie - VCA, man that is one expensive brand!!

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

I think I am done buying jewelry, probably forever! I have four kids, and 3 out of 4 will be in college at the SAME time. :errrr: Ack! That is going to be expensive. So the priorities and spending have changed and shifted. Plus I am happy with my collection.

That is very nice to hear, Laila! :appl:

Reading that made me realize that I, too, am happy with my collection. What a neat, succint way to put it! It's reassuring to hear from someone who just thinks they're done and is happy with what the jewelry collection they have. It is possible, yay!

I think all I miss is the chase.

Jambalaya, totally agree. We are kindred spirits. I have owned expensive stones and inexpensive ones, and I felt like the money spent was not "worth it" to me with the expensive stuff in the sense that you don't get much more "look", even though you are certainly *spending* much more! I get a ton of comliments on some of my most inexpensive pieces.

Thant's exactly how I feel too. And I'm glad that I'm not the only one who went through spending for a number of years, only then to cut right back! I always imagine that others spend very gradually and sensibly in small increments, not like me - I'm kind of all-or-nothing!

I particularly agree with all the bolded. It's a relief to find I'm not the only one on Pricescope who feels kind of satiated. And I agree with not planning too far - I have found some unique pieces that were completely unplanned-for. Tastes can change, too - I used to like small delicate pieces and now I like larger ones. And as for the search....that's really why I'm letting the tourmaline flower pendant languish in the store for a while. When/if I get it, I'm going to make a day of it. Go for lunch, have a glass of sparkling wine, look round the stores - and since I'm thinking of spending a few hundred, I'll ask to see what else the store has before I commit to the pendant. Right now just the thought/anticipation of this day is making me happy!

Oh, it's good to hear that someone else feels the same way! It's interesting to me that you have actually owned expensive stones (I haven't) and you thought something similar to what I suspected, in terms of the additional impact relative to how much more money is spent. I tried on a 2-carat 25k stone and it just didn't look like I thought it would - not really wowzers. It was nice, but I honestly thought my pink sapphire halo, my pear halo, and my aquamarine bow have a ton more impact, and all of them cost a fraction of the 25k ring. But maybe I just appreciate design more than plain diamonds. I used to think that I was a diamond lover, and then I came here and realized that I'm an amateur compared to how much some here love diamonds! I think I'm happier with many different items of varying designs than fewer really expensive pieces.

This is so interesting to me, because I feel pretty much exactly the opposite! I'm working on consolidating my collection into a small handful of must-haves that I can allocate all my funds to. I love that there are so many diverse opinions and collecting philosophies on here

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

Now that I've found my "everyday suite" - a RHR and small diamond stud earrings that I love - I'm not shopping as much or with the same interest. But I might just buy another piece or two if I find that something really speaks to me.

I might stop for a few years, but I always start back up. I've slowed down considerably though considering the where things are in the colored stone world. (and frankly, I have some expensive tastes these days!!) I guess you can say I'm on a very slow buy rotation.

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

I still have quite a long list of jewellery items to purchase. Besides, a woman can never have too much jewellery IMHO.

I got my center a mate a few weeks ago and Erika Winters is making stud settings - I adore her Grace solitaire and asked her to capture that look and feel. I should have the first CADs in a few days - I can't wait! Jeff White is cutting a yellow zircon for the RDG, and I wear my WF eternity every day ::)

The RDG is breathtakingly beautiful and utterly unwearable on any sort of regular basis - I'm beyond terrified of damaging it, or scratching it and destroying the varied surface textures :(sad and I wanted large studs, and I was somewhat surprised to find that I didn't actually miss not wearing a single large diamond on my finger.... that's PS heresy, I know! The re-set cycle ends here (I have no regrets re. the second WF, the DBL, and the RDG, but the small fortune I spent on the others - questionable buying choices indeed ;( ).

Re: Bought all your jewellery items - Finished shopping for

Sorry pyramid, for the thread jack. I guess given my recent purchase the answer would be no. If nothing changes for us dramatically, I'm done with big rocks. I would like to get Cartier and VCA pieces. These require a lot of thought and deliberation, more so than diamond staples. I have very few pieces compared to other PSers. But my thing is that I want to wear every piece of jewelry I have every day. So that limits what I buy. I bugs me to have a Tiffany soleste sitting unworn. It bugs to even have bands not used daily. I just want to sell them.

Yssie, I just wanted to share with you cause we've discussed this in the past. My first VCA piece. :appl:

VCA / Cartier bug has bitten me hard!

TURQUOISE SWEET!!! I've been meaning to ask what you've been up to on the VCA front

It looks wonderful on you!! That bright summer teal suits your skin so well  do you see any green in it IRL? It looks greenish in your pic, and I know VCA's turquose can have a bit of variation... Oh my goodness it looks fantastic with your H and your gigantic tennis bracelet! Do you wear that stack regularly?
