Does this happen!
Can you offer advice about what people should plan to buy or should we just go along as we wish?

To me, it's just not worth it, I get so much pleasure out of items costing much less. I've tried on a couple of large diamonds and although they're lovely, they're simply not worth the huge money to me. My pear bezeled halo satisfies me with the look of a large-ish diamond ring, and was well under 2k. You know what I realized when trying on really expensive jewelry? Items costing 25k don't look so very different from items costing about 2k. The reason? I figured out that most of the impact of a jewelry item is in the first 1k spent. I don't find you get much more "look" or impact relative to the money spent when you go into the tens of thousands. (This applies to jewelry pieces, like pendants and dress rings, not single diamonds, although I tried on two 25k diamond solitaire rings and I didn't think they looked anything like 23k better than my pear halo.) Just my opinion, anyway!

My head still likes beautiful jewels, but my heart isn't in it anymore, at least for important pieces. I knew that for sure when, 2 yrs. ago at the Pricescope get together, I tried on a 5 carat pear that DH said I could have if I wanted it and I passed (Yenny and Diamondseeker, if you're reading this, do you remember that ring? It was gorgeous). I still buy small colored stones from time to time.
Don't have any advice other than buy what you want, when you want as long as you can afford it and it makes you happy.

I have no desire to purchase major bling and hope I am sort of done with that. Small bling purchases like earrings (I am an earring ho) are really all I plan on getting for the future. I am bling satiated.![]()
Pyramid, the only comments I will add is that planning everything too carefully and far out into the future re bling purchases out can backfire. Sometimes you just fall in love with a piece and you have to have it and also preferences can and usually do change. Plan but don't over plan and be flexible to change re your preferences. And most importantly have fun with it and enjoy.
One more thing to add. I find that much of the fun and joy from bling shopping comes from the search itself. The process makes me happy and brings me countless hours of joyful involvement. Something to think about and remember. Taking one's time is often a good thing to allow the process to be fully enjoyed.

I have owned expensive stones and inexpensive ones, and I felt like the money spent was not "worth it" to me with the expensive stuff in the sense that you don't get much more "look", even though you are certainly *spending* much more! I get a ton of comliments on some of my most inexpensive pieces.

Oh, it's good to hear that someone else feels the same way! It's interesting to me that you have actually owned expensive stones (I haven't) and you thought something similar to what I suspected, in terms of the additional impact relative to how much more money is spent. I tried on a 2-carat 25k stone and it just didn't look like I thought it would - not really wowzers. It was nice, but I honestly thought my pink sapphire halo, my pear halo, and my aquamarine bow have a ton more impact, and all of them cost a fraction of the 25k ring. But maybe I just appreciate design more than plain diamonds. I used to think that I was a diamond lover, and then I came here and realized that I'm an amateur compared to how much some here love diamonds! I think I'm happier with many different items of varying designs than fewer really expensive pieces.

If I remember correctly she cited concerns about forever increasing prices as her primary motivation... whilst IMO that is a valid concern - we all know how luxury market pricing works- I don't believe it's a realistic or productive objective for most people: styles change, preferences change, priorities change, means change.
I don't think I'll ever be done. That said, I've made some questionable buying choices and have some regrets - they're excellent reminders to be wary of jumping on something without careful consideration. For the past couple of years I've followed a "sleep on it for a week" policy with larger purchases and that's been working very well for meI'm in the process of having a pair of earrings made that I will quite literally never be able to upgrade even if I want to one day, because my household will never, ever bring in sufficient income to seriously contemplate doing so, and it's the first project of that sort for me - the first project wherein I can say with absolute certainty that I've truly reached my maximum spending capacity. It's... humbling. And for that particular flavour of jewellery I am finished - out of necessity!
I'm more interested in buying branded pieces these days as they're far more mind-clean in terms of long-term value. Having trawled every last one of the VCA threads on TPF and communed with the ghosts of VCA discussions past... I'm going to make buying branded pieces I'm interested in a priority because five years from now I suspect I'll be very, very glad I did!

You, Jan, and Anita are my inspirations!!
I got my center a mate a few weeks ago and Erika Winters is making stud settings - I adore her Grace solitaire and asked her to capture that look and feel. I should have the first CADs in a few days - I can't wait! Jeff White is cutting a yellow zircon for the RDG, and I wear my WF eternity every day
ETA: On re-read... My last post is in rather the opposite of the spirit of this thread, so... my apologies Pyramid, I'll leave it to that!

OMG...you've been very busy these days, Yssie! I can't wait to see what you come up with--those are going to be some blingtastic studs if you are using your old center diamond! Are you using your eternity band on your left hand only? How will you use your RDG ring?
Sorry for the threadjack, Pyramid!
