Hello, I am pretty new here (long-time luker) and I have decided on getting a sapphire engagement ring. I was wondering if you had any suggestions at where to look for this engagement ring or for the center stone. I''m thinking about the 1ct - 1.50 ct range. Thank you.

Hello and welcome!

I guess my first question for you would be what kind of color sapphire are you looking for? Also what is your budget? Do you have a perference for shape at all?

For just the stone I recommend looking into jeff white at http://whitesgems.com/

I would also search sapphire rings in the search bar as many examples will come up. If you see something you like the poster usually says where the got the stone and or ring from.

Attached is a picture of a ring that my husband gave me for my 1 year anniversary. It is a 1.12ct velvet blue sapphire that has been heated. Though the picture doesn''t do it justice. I hope you find something you love!

Is your budget just for the blue sapphire alone? Do you mind if it has been heat treated? Your budget will preclude a nontreated stone which is why I am asking.

hello and welcome!

be aware that ct weight may not always be consistent with face up size. I''d stick to using mm measurements when looking for a gem (say 6.5mm, but I''m not sure exactly what size you''re going for)

I also suggest that you make a collage on your computer of the color range you would be happy with. This is so if you do have to contact a cutter, there is a bit more clarity on what you mean when you say ''ceylon blue'' because it can mean different things to different people.

I also suggest Jeff White, as I had a wonderful experience working with him.

Dan Stair just posted this one, though I think it might be too small for what you''d like: http://www.customgemstones.com/NewStone.html

many cutters have more material that isn''t on their website, so inquire as to whether or not they have something you''d be interested in.

Good luck and congratulations!

My budget is for the stone alone and no, I do not mind heat treated stones.

Well, you''ve got nice taste! Unfortunately, that''s one of the more expensive colors to get for a sapphire. I''ve been looking around (about 15-20 websites) and there''s not much out there at the moment. I would highly recommend contacting a lapidary like Dana at MasterCut Gems or Gene at PrecisionGem(as well as Jeff White...though he might prove out of budget). Sapphires are usually cut into cushions or ovals, so it can be hard to get a round unless you get one cut for you.

From my search, these were the stones that were closest to what you were looking for (in no particular order):

1ct sapphire

Another one (I prefer this one to the first)

1.18 carats

You may also want to look at Planetary Gems as they have a larger number of rounds than most places, and their prices appear fairly reasonable.

Good luck with your search!
