Hello,

I have started to research parching a diamond and have come across the Blue Nile signature collection and want to know if the extra cost is worth it. There is about a $ 1000 difference between there very good and signature cuts. Thanks for all the help.

Macizumi,

Welcome.

Not enough info to answer, however.

For example, in their princess cuts...their signature line is in my opinion incompetent; they don't associate them with current recognized practices of ideal grading, found in AGS certified diamonds...which they also carry, downgrade to like good, and don't particularly discount.

A general recommendation...a) stick to using their cert provided info to match with the HCA, and if you find attractive options costing a few dollars more (very good is less than ideal in rounds, for example...and ideal may be just fine), the investment may be well worth it.

Additionally, we hear their signature line are "in house," are not virtual...so part of the premium may be associated with their labor to have hand picked these...which may be worth taking advantage of.

One more thing...if non-round...maybe better to avoid BN...(if also non-princess...where maybe you can scare up a deal, since they do carry AGS options...ditto any other future AGS certed option...like Asshers). For these...you want the vendor's assessment...and you won't get it from them.

Macizumi, I can''t speak as to cost, but I can tell you that I am the proud recipient of a 1.5 carat Blue Nile Signature Ideal princess cut and it''s brilliant, firey, and strangers stop me to look at it.

My fiance did a fair amount of research, worked hard to educate himself on diamonds, and is still delighted with his selection. He also thought Blue Nile provided him with excellent customer service.

March, Macizumi,

Umm.....did I say the signature series were uniquely hand picked?

March, congratulations. No doubt the signatures are nice. I would say they have probably inflexibly created a proportion set for ideal princesses that inappropriately exclude certain other proven sets, as well.

Not a professional...just a busy body opinionated noise maker.

Can't say I didn't get you to say hello and introduce yourself.

Good wishes to all.

My SIL has a Blue Nile Signature round and it''s gorgeous! It''s an H, VS1 (I think) 1.60 range in a simple yellow gold setting. My DH and I have purchased two engagement rings from Blue Nile, both times it was not from their signature line (althought my new round is an AGS000 Ideal H&A).

If you are looking at an AGSL stone, you can get the cert number, go to the AGSL site and it will give you all of the angles, %, etc. so you can plug that into the Cut Advisor and the AGA DIY cut grader.

Good luck!

Hey Regular Guy,

Thanks for the response, sorry I did not give enough info, I’m looking at there signature cut asshers stone. What do you mean in your last statement about the Asshers stones.

Thanks again

Consider providing a link to an option you might be considering?

Asshers should be in a similar boat to Princesses. AGS are certifying them now...and using grading standards to help you pick a good one. For princesses, BN has ignored this info...and applied their own criteria.

But...with Asshers...this is very new. Not sure if BN has any yet...or what they'll do with these.

Ok...I went to take a look. Of 1800 total Asshers (they have a few more)...4 are certified from AGS...and either zero or one of those has reference to a cut grade. This one has some sort of reference to it...maybe it's a demo (?).

Other vendors probably will target these, and have more.

Mac,

Despite actually knowing very little about diamonds personally, I seem to be comfortable passing along gossip about them.

Experts say you really can''t talk too sensibly about proportions beyonds rounds...with respect to knowing what they will end up looking like. This includes princesses, which are relatively simple compared to Asshers.

Storm seems to think he understands them. He makes comments about them, stopping threads dead in their tracks (see here...kind of like mathematicians making math jokes between themselves), and experts think he knows enough about diamonds to be scary. Hopefully...he will comment.

I doubt anyone else really can...without the benefit of things like the use of reflector technology...which probably can aid more considerably. But...BN won''t help you here, I don''t think.
