Blue and Green should never be seen...?

Hi all,

I'm after a bit of expert colour and setting advice from the lovely forum members. Generally, if I have to keep repeatedly going back to look at a picture of something, it means I should pay attention and start thinking about why that might be the case. And right now, a particular colour combo is pinging my radar.

My favourite colour is green, and my hubby's is blue. For our wedding last year we sort of stumbled in to a blue + green...thing (not a theme per se) and ended up with a mixture of those colours and a peacock trend. I have also noticed that I tend to wear a particular combo of navy blue + kelly green to work a lot, and it seems to really work for me.

While doing my monthly wishful trawl through Ruby Lane, the below rings really caught my eye as well.

HOWEVER - I've always been told that blue + green together is a rather fraught combination, and what I'm noticing is that most of the jewellery designs that seem to work also have diamonds involved to break up the colour mixture somewhat. Kaleigh's stunning three stone + halo is another example of this principle working well: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/sapphire-emeralds-and-diamonds-oh-my.118106/

So (even though I really should be concentrating on my upcoming ruby or zircon projects), I want to start planning for a future project that uses these colours somehow. My question to the forum is: do you think it is workable to have just the blue and green together, or do you think I will need to incorporate diamonds in to it as well to break it up a bit?

I tend to like the darker colours of emeralds, tsavs and sapphires together, rather than pastel combos such as aquas and chrysos or peridots etc. I also don't want this to just be an accent to a centre diamond. The focus should be on the coloured stones, unlike my example pics above.

Thanks in advance!

  :appl: wow! I love those! I love blue & green together ( doesn't only go in a washing machine heehee, old nugget my mum says) . Those rings are to die for, esp the first one! I'd love to have that!

I'm waiting on a lovely blue/ green cab tourmaline and I just had a great idea! I may do a sapphire/emerald halo! Ah ha!

I think they can definitely work together, it just depends on the individual stones and the overall design. :) And I also love that first ring you posted!

They're good fun aren't they? I found this one as well, which is particularly cute:

I love the richness of the emeralds in it.

I'm partial to the combo of the emeralds and sapphires with the milgrain in the middle... but then again I love milgrain. And IMHO the little bit of metal and texture between the different types of gems provides just the right amount of physical separation and added visual interest.

I think you may be right. I want to avoid anything that looks too engagement ring-y, noting my e-ring is a three stone, so I'm thinking maybe a 5 stone band using the milgrain to break it up. Maybe something like the Brian Gavin below with emeralds or tsavs instead of the diamonds (and slightly lighter sapphires)?

I already have a plain five stone emerald band (prong set) but could maybe stack it with it as well. Hmm... ideas... thanks heaps for the input.

I think a five stone band would be lovely, and the fact that it has your and your hubby's favorite colors would make it all the sweeter. :) I'm sure you've thought of this already, but sapphires are much more durable than either tsavs or particularly emeralds... just mentioning it in case you were planning on wearing the band regularly as a stacker. Though if the stones are bezeled I would think that should help protect them (?). Also, emeralds and tsavs tend to behave differently - from what I've seen emeralds tend to be more glowy, tsavs more sparkly. Sorry that is such a long paragraph, I'm starting to ramble, normally my brain doesn't work well at this time of night!

Here are a few more potential inspiration photos I found while scouting for emerald and sapphire rings...

Blue & green are great together -- they're next to each other on the color wheel, after all. The saying is "red & green should never be seen." I love the rings you put up -- especially the 2nd one, an easy shape to wear. I like them together, with or without diamonds or bezeling (metal); don't think they need to be separated unless that's what you like. Go for it!! :wavey:

There is nothing wrong with blue and green, as long as they have different tone, not all dark and not all light. Having contrast of dark with light draws the eye in, so either dark blue with light green or dark green with light blue, if you don't want to add diamonds to break up the dark tone.

I like the blue/green examples you have. I think blue/green does not work well in jewelry when both are very dark, or very light. Vivid blue and vivid green complement each other.

Oh I love that one, JaneSmith. Thanks for the inspiration. It's good to see what the colours look like up against each other.

I also really like the second one from the bottom that VirginiaZee put up. The milgrain really adds something to it!

I think the next step will be to play around with the tones of the colours. I have tsavs and emeralds that I can use to compare, but don't have any blue sapphires to put side by side with them. I have some iolite earrings, but they're probably too pale and not saturated enough for what I'm after here.

Oh well, any excuse to visit the local gem stores and jewellers and have a play! Thanks guys, I'll update with progress :twirl:
