Our road is not plowed. At all. So we are completely snowed in. I'm not complaining, because at least we have power, but I am just surprised. I don't recall being snowed in like this ever before, but I guess we haven't seen a storm like this in several decades.

Adorable dogs in the snow pictures, Enerchi, Al, and Loves Vintage! And you look good, too, Enerchi! I hadn't looked at this thread for a few hours and it seemed to have grown a lot. Some of you sure got a lot of snow on your houses, too! (Al, Christina) I hope you are warm and toasty inside drinking hot chocolate or the beverage of your choice!

Same here Loves Vintage. We are completely snowed in, and have not seen a plow in 2 days. My husband took a walk over to our nearest main street, and even that has not been plowed to the pavement and is very slow going. We shoveled out our cars, but there is no where to go. Our power flickers from time to time, but so far so good. We are hoping to take a walk to the nearest market and get a few supplies. Schools have not officially cancelled, but I do not see how the buses could get through or people in our neighborhood getting out of the house to drive them to school. It is warm today (40s) and will be all week, so hopefully some of it will melt.

I know it was not as bad as the Blizzard of 78, but my neighborhood sure looks it.

I don't have any snowfall totals for Mid-coast Maine yet, but I do have some photos. I'll get them uploaded and posted soon. I'm guessing that we got between 24-30 inches, but because of blowing and drifting it's very hard to tell. DH does snow removal in the winter and he left home at 3:30 pm yesterday, he just called and said he wouldn't be home before midnight and that he will have to go back out at 6am.


edit: just checked and we got 33.5 inches! wow!!!

I didn't know you live in Maine. I'm just outside of Portland and we got around 27"....at least we're not in Gorham!

My husband noticed that our street was plowed, but only up to our neighbor's house. The town left a huge mound of snow in the middle of street. Our neighbor said they got stuck, so just gave up, and I guess will come back, eventually, with a pay-loader. So, DH went out and plowed out (with a snow blower) the section of the street that connects us to the open end of street. Then, he helped our other neighbor clear his long hilly driveway. That neighbor borrowed a snow blower from another neighbor. Most people here have contracts with local plow operators, but no one can get through, so a lot of driveways haven't been cleared yet either. Another neighbor is now working on their section of the street. No word from the town. I was looking at the NH Register website, and it seems that many streets in many towns still haven't been plowed. I expect that most of the schools in CT will be closed tomorrow. I have no intention of driving on the roads anytime soon. A friend told me that a lot of the highway exit ramps are blocked with piles of snow.

LV, I'm with you on snowplows -- guess they have too far to go to stop & think. One winter in Conn. we had a ton of snow; the plows mounded it into a bank 4 ft. high, 3 ft. wide on the roadside, then it froze, you get the picture. In our mailbox we find a notice that USPS won't deliver our mail until we clean off the mess in front of it. Sheesh, I'm surprised they didn't fine us for being so sloppy!

Everybody's dogs are SO SO neat! And happy. Love you & your buddies, Enerchi. Everybody's buddies! Griffin sounds about right, Deb. What a funny crackpot. I was amused when I got my 1st Siberian puppy -- usually you say, "The weather's awful, better get the puppy in." With Arctic types it's "The weather's awful -- let the puppy out!" My favorite photo is of one of my dogs outside; next to her a thermometer reading 28 degrees & her brand new $150 doghouse -- and she's lying fast asleep atop a snow drift. I call it "Doghouse for Sale."

Ha! Snow angels, WD! Good dog. A friend of mine in Conn. let her Siberians into the back yard & said they had a ball blazing their own trails through the snow. Did you hug yours last night? A 2-dog night at least!

Awww, Murry is so cute in his little, little boots! I remember the photos you posted of him in another thread, VL. Murry is one cool doggie! Love his coat, too!

Laurie, This has been one strange storm! People keep saying that the town plows can't make it through the snow, yet there are tons of smaller trucks with plows clearing out parking lot after parking lot on the tv. I don't get it, but I'm not going anywhere anyway, so I'll stop complaining!

I love all of the dog pictures too! Best part of the storm coverage for sure!!

Loves vintage, we made it to the market and back. Sidewalks are impassable, so we had to walk in the street, which are not that great. Thankfully, Stop & Shop was fully restocked. School in our city is closed for tomorrow. What is strange is that with the hurricane last year, there was no question of why power was out as there were trees down everywhere. But not so from the blizzard. In my neighborhood, I have power as does my neighbor to the left. My neighbor to the right is dark. Same thing across the street and in back of us. One person has it, another does not.

We did not pass one snow plow. There does not seem to be any progress in cleaning things up.

Ruby, That's really odd about the random outages. I wonder why. That's great that you live so close to a stop and shop. I would not want to be walking out there. We had a couple walk by on snowshoes yesterday!! So, we did have a payloader come clear more of our street (but not all of it!). It's a private landscaping company. They had to clear the street to get to their client's driveway. I just heard from a friend who reported a roof cave in at her condo complex in northern CT. We have a roof rake, and I managed to clear a lot of snow off of the roof near the driveway, but could not get to the rest of the house because snow was too deep, and I wasn't really that committed to the cause!! Apparently, we are getting freezing rain in the am.

It's interesting that you made this comment, rosetta. There was an an article in the "Opinion" pages of, "The New York Times" just this week on the evanescence of snow. The author makes the point that the rarity of snow in England is one reason for the fascination with it.

So happy to have power/heat again! The electricity went out here Friday night around 9:00 and came back on this afternoon. Last night was ccccold!

We still don't have power, but I'm at work now and feel like I've stumbled into the modern world from a remote cabin in the woods. We've used our wood stove to cook, make food, dry clothes, heat water for Katie's baths...it's our lifeblood right now. At least now more stores are open so we're not tethered to our house.

Here's a couple of photos. We stacked wood on our porch to protect it from the snow. Ha!

Ruby59 - Are you still snowed in? We still have yet to see anyone from the town/state, but our road is passable at this point. Parking at work was nuts this morning. There are no spaces left in the lot, so some yahoos just parked to block in (completely, no means of egress!) 30 or so of their co-workers cars. I got one of the last actual spaces in another lot, thankfully!

No plows, but a lot of melting. I think I heard the governor say that their main duty now would be to dig out catch basins to prevent flooding The streets in my neighborhood are a mess, and in some areas I have read where neighbors got together and dug themselves out. Thankfully, my car has 4 wheel drive, so while it is slow going, I can get through. Getting the youngest to school was extremely difficult because some streets are so narrow, traffic can only go in one direction. It took 40 minutes to go from one city to the next to drop my middle child off at college because there is no place to park.
